Today I impulse bought yet another header

Killer B 321 stainless "holy" header with vband up pipe and the new billet collector.

I now have 2 of literally the best manifolds made for a subaru and have to decide on which one I want to put on my car

Oh the humanity

It would be nice to see a stock vs full race vs KB from someone who both knows what they're doing and doesnt have an agenda.

Update:

Brake boost at stage 2 power for the 200th time, spun all 4 about 10' and then center diff esploded.

yeah!!!!

Not sure what I"m gonna do right now, center diff is fucked, metal bits all in trans. I've read people just replace center diff and keep going.

I think I'm going to buy a used transmission on ebay and swap it in, hope it works and gets it back on the road. I don't wanna spend 3K on a reman trans. I'm hoping ebay trans works ok, if it slips or is worn out but works I may then tear down my old one and rebuild it, then swap the center diff from ebay trans to mine that's been rebuilt and put that in eventually. Haven't ever rebuilt a 5 speed auto so hoping the ebay trans is decent. Looks to have about 3x as many pieces as a 3 speed auto.

is this a 5 speed or a 6 speed? Guessing its an sti if you were able to spin the tires on the stock turbo.

He has an OBXT.

Pat, did you check and make sure its the diff and not the trans?

I pulled the tail off the trans, removed center diff, the gears haz no teeth. Trans could be damaged too, dunno, but diff is fucked! Trying to find a local trans but that hasn't happened yet, about to order one in an hour online if I don't find something closer sooner. Hexmods LLC finally emailed me back last night, said he might have a center diff, but I'm waiting on a reply back right now. WIll just buy another trans in an hour if I don't hear back from him before then.

Parts from Subaru just to repair center diff is 600 before shipping, figure I might as well buy a used trans for that much!

I wish used 5 speeds were that cheap. For the cost of a used 5 speed round these parts you could nearly do a JDM sti swap.

wow that's the 1st time I hear of a center diff explode on a 5sp
usually they get progressively worse and slowly fail, never seen one just burst from a hard launch before. I've seen (and experienced 1sthand) my fair share of gear teeth sheared off though

why not upgrade?

Yeah thats weird that you sheared the teeth on the center diff. I had the center diff bearings wear out, and some people have the viscous coupling wear but never heard of the teeth. I think people that would break the teeth in the diff normally break 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear first. The budget JDM v8 swap might be your best bet. Your stock front axles hubs and everything, the jdm tranny, drive shaft, and rear diff, and hybrid axles in the bakc to retain your stock rear parts. That should cost whatever the swap parts costs from ebay + like $150 for the part to make hybrid axles + clutch and flywheel if you replace that stuff.

5 speed auto, 5EAT. New motor and turbo (both new, stock subaru parts), stage 2, 40*F outside, 600+ lbs of **** in the car and one 240lb passenger when I broke it. I've launched it 200 times before, 35 times on a preped drag strip.... , but only maybe 50 times since stage 2. Ripped the teeth off the sun gear completely.

Not much to upgrade on the diff. Hex mods emailed me back, waiting now to see what he has.

I like it as is, well as was before it esploded. Its my work truck, not a racecar, just need it to run and be reliable, I'll stop brake boosting it as that's the only thing that breaks the center diff according to the forums. Don't want to spend a lot of money, just cheap and back on the road.

How much power can the STI 6 speed hold before they start failing a la Miata 6 speed +/- 375hp?

I went to Gesso's on Sunday and got to help fiddle with the EJ25 for his Forester project. Man, boxer engines are weird. We probably could have got it running but hit a snag and need to order some parts.

Well, I bought a used transmission online. I called this guy hexmods, talked to him for almost an hour. He knows A LOT about this trans, and he eventually found the right parts I needed to fix my center diff, but he wanted way too much for the parts unfortunately. He's even not too far from where I live! But I could basically buy an entire trans and have it shipped for 180 more! So I had to do that, he just wasn't flexible on the price. It was 830 shipped for another transmission with a 6 month warranty. They had pics of the pan too and it was clean, guy said they take pics of the pan on every trans, and this one was the cleanest they had (out of the 6 he had). He is going to make and ship me a set of bushings that replace the factory needle bearings. Makes the center diff stronger/less likely to fail again.

Trans was 830, bushings were 239 shipped, I'm sure add another 40 for trans fluid, 20 for misc stuff, I happen to already have a new filter, but still we're at 1,129 in parts.... Oh well I guess!

What's up Subaru guys. If I can turn this internship into a job then I think I'll be in the market for a daily. I don't know much about Subaru's, but I have always wanted a hawk eye sti. Like before I knew jack **** about cars I wanted one. Before I go and do all my research can anyone talk me out of wanting one? I would prefer clean unmodded though something like exhaust, springs, or tune wouldn't bother me either. What say you subaru people?
