In Maine, flashing yellow is "proceed with caution", not even yield, while flashing red is "stop".

If the lights are inoperable then I'd recommend stopping whether they're flashing yellow or green, however, usually when lights are broken they flash red.

Otherwise, flashing yellow is obviously proceed with caution. If someone stops at a flashing yellow in front of me I'm going to rear end the ---- out of them.

 

not in VA, it becomes a yield sign; not a stop forever sign. Our driving book says: slow and proceed with caution. If it's flashing red, then you must stop like it's a 4 way.

 

Vash has it. If that light is always a flashing yellow, then it is "proceed with caution." For example, a sharp turn or hidden driveway ahead. If it is normally a "green-yellow-red" traffic light that is out of order or inoperable and has defaulted to flashing yellow, you treat the intersection as a (four)-way stop.

I would be surprised if that is actually different in other states.

 

It is different in Maine, anyway. When the traffic lights here default to flashing, the larger of the roads usually blinks yellow, while the smaller flashes red. Flashing red means stop (obviously) while flashing yellow just means slow down, but you have the right of way. I would be confused if flashing yellow meant different things depending on what the light usually did. We have lights around that are only used in emergencies (posted in front of fire stations, for instance) which flash yellow most of the time, but look like regular stoplights otherwise, and it would be horrible if somebody stopped there.

Basically, there is no reason to stop for a yellow light in this state, unless you know it's going to turn red before you get there.

this. with both the gas and brake pedals. some are far worse than others, but some are actually bad enough that i no longer will allow them to drive, since it has actually made me ill in the past.

Who here knows a creeper? You know the people that stop then creep an inch, then stop and creep an inch. I can't stand that. Imagine if the light was a bit longer than normal, soon those people would be out into the center of the intersection at their current creep rate. I always thought it was so they could get a jump but usually they proceed on green slower than normal.


So the guy who got me into Miata's had a brand new 2001 or 2 (do not remember) and we went out for lunch every so often. He would say is your belt tight cause I'm going to do a hard braking. It impressed me with the G's. So then he said watch this and we late and hard braked for an intersection (not really the best idea but we knew the road was dry and clean) and a person observing this who was driving perpendicular to us through the green thought we were going to keep going through the red so he slowed rapidly and honked at us. It wasn't very nice but it was good to see some excellent observation from a driver.
Believe it or not we were at the same intersection (another lunch with him) in the Miata and we had not a creeper but a racer. I don't remember the vehicle but I do remember my friend saying I think this guy wants to race. We were late into the red light so it was going to change pretty soon. We didn't make eye contact but my friend did feign a drop the clutch start but only moved half a foot or so. Well the other guy took the bait and he was gone - right through the light that was red and into some small Ford product - bang. Not a huge impact where anyone got hurt but enough to crunch a door with the "racers" bumper. We felt bad and a bit responsible but really he should have been observing the light not "the competition". We still mention it every so often and smile/feel a bit of irresponsibility. Back then I dreamed of a Miata after bing in his and having him let me drive it, well now 10 years later I have one better and faster than that one I sat in way way back. He's the guy I've mentioned (lunch drive) that has progressed to 2 faster cars; one is a German turbo with an emergency phone number as a badge and one has some silly ACR letters after the name. He still respects the Miata though.........

Yes you can unless otherwise posted and we treat a 4 way flashing yellow as a proceed but with caution. We have the metric system too so when we measure we dont have 2/78 ths and 64/92nds left over. My car gets 4 rods to the furlong - wonk dit dit...... Then again I dont know my own weigh in kg's - ha

 

I wish they seperated from us western Canadians when they had the chance. I find having 2 national languages and their desire to be only French a form of treason. I'd rather have my packages of food in English and Spanish instead of English and French.....

South Park animates Canadians this way. Their mouth is the halfway point of two semi circles that make up their head. The top half lifts up and away when they talk; have you not noticed this? Also, in Canadia everything that is usually circular is rectangular or square- obviously.

I would find it difficult to believe that any state has implemented a policy suggesting that an intersection would ever be controlled by a "4-way flashing yellow". Mis-operating lights will only ever have one direction of traffic flashing yellow, either that, or they will be all flashing red, or not lit at all. If I came across a 4-way yellow intersection, I would impact a driver, and then I would sue the state for being fucked up.
