Who said a couple of pages back that they liked Sailor Jerry rum? That stuff is terribly harsh. It bites like rubbing alcohol and doesn't have a redeeming flavor on top of it.

Buy one bottle of Ron Zacapa and you will be ruined as far as tolerating any of those harsh rums like it or Bacardi ever again.

Speaking of rums, has anyone here ever tried Cruzan Black Strap Rum? Much as all rums are made from sugar cane syrups, Cruzan Black Strap tastes like it was made from molasses syrup and has a really unique flavor profile. I recommend it if you like molasses, as it makes a great rum and tonic in a tall glass especially if you go heavy on the limes. Very refreshing.

My mixed drink of choice is exceedingly simple- Rum & Coke.

On the subject of rum, there is much to be said. For the purpose of mixing with cola, fanciness is not required. Historically, my favorite rum for this purpose has been Cruzan estate light rum. It has a rather interesting flavor that I can't quite put my finger on, but it really shines through. Relatively cheap, though not stocked at most grocery stores.

Lacking that, good ole' Bacardi Silver also works just fine. It's hard to really go wrong with rum for the purpose of mixing.

A couple of months ago, I happened to buy a handle of Bacardi Silver that came with a little airline-bottle sample of Bacardi's new Oakheart spiced rum. I've never been a huge spiced rum fan, and when I tried it straight it was absolutely horrible (think Southern Comfort with a Ricky Martín accent), though mixed with cola I was really quite surprised at how well it worked. This was clearly the intended purpose for this rum, and I've since purchased several bottles. It only seems to be available in a 750ml size, however availability is far better than Cruzan (they carry it at the local Stater Bros), so it's become my new everyday mixing rum.

As for a good sipping rum? I hate to keep sounding like a broken record, but it's Bacardi again. Specifically, Bacardi Rum 8 Anos Reserva Superior. It's a rather simple rum which spends 8 years on oak. Serve it neat at room temperature, and it can be savored as though it were a $50 single-malt.

Also, will someone take that damned image out of post #62? It slows this page down way too much on my phone.

I will have to pick that up; I am a fan of Cruzan as a value rum and I am a fan of Gosling's Black Seal rums (80 and 151).

I will also have to try a "rum and tonic" but it seems somewhat... off to say.

I've been meaning to try the Oakheart as well. I am with you in terms of mixing "decent" spirits.

Another one to try if you haven't - and sixshooter might like this one with tonic - is 10 Cane.

Another mixed drink I like is a Belfast Bomber:

Bailey's cut with Bourbon or Cognac

I don't always drink mixed drinks but when I do, it's an old fashion with makers mark.

I much prefer Gimlets and Whiskey Sours using Calamansi instead of lemons. Nicer flavor.

I told Y8s I liked the same and he loled at me...

I am huge into vodkas. Sometimes with a little water on ice.

It is quite smooth and when brought down in temperature is quite pleasing just to sip. Add water if you drink in quantity.

Took that pic of my "shelf" where i keep most of my stuff.

I have been experimenting with coffee liquers recently as I used to have a Starbucks liquer set of light and dark but I have since ran out and its been discontinued. I have several different variations but nothing is the same. My favorite of the collection has to be Patron xo Cafe so far but its a tad harsh and needs to be mixed down to sip.

My wife was a huge fan of the Starbucks liqueur. None of the others we have tried have been the same. The Patron XO Cafe' is definitely one of the best remaining choices.

You must use several squeezed lime wedges for the rum and tonic or it might taste too sweet. It was something I discovered on a Caribbean adventure. It is also not good with some rums for whatever reason. I can attest to Mount Gay Rum and the Cruzan Black Strap being good in it but I tried it with a couple of others and it wasn't close to tasting right. Mount Gay is good and smooth for any rum purposes you might have anyway. I always enjoy asking for it loudly by name at the bar just to f with people.

I have seen but never yet tried 10Cane. What are its attributes?

Also a fan of Mount Gay rums. For mixing with Coke, I usually go with Mount Gay or Appleton Estate.

I'm probably not very good with descriptions as I am not properly educated on the terminology. It's much more flavorful than most white rums, a little on the sweet side.

It's almost like a smoother, more palateable "overproof" if that makes any sense.

They dont have that here, at lesat not at my ABC. I like Kaluha a lot, and wanted to try the starbucks stuff.

I tried the Godiva liquer and was not a fan, it was like drinking artifical chocolate.

For those of you buying at ABC, consider branching out to smaller locally owned places.

Or, if you can find one in your area, Total Wine & Spirits is pretty great in terms of price and selection.

Faefae - What's a "bottle of sazerac?" I thought that was a cocktail.

there is a Total Wine in virgnia. But spirits are sold only at state run liquor stores. branching out requires trips to other states/districts of columbia.
