Want to get an e-book reader. Kindle, Nook or something else? And reasons why!

Note that this will be used to read books only. No web surfing, no online subscriptions or anything else. Just a means to read whatever I want, whenever I want.

Seriously?

I've never run AEMPro, but I used an ancient tablet PC (an eleven year old Fujistu) for running the Greddy E-Manage tuning software as well as MegaTune, Tuner Studio, and MegaLogViewer. It has an 800x600 display, and I found it perfectly adequate for those. If I were buying a new tuning PC today, it would most likely be one of the 9-10" class netbooks such as the Lenovo IdeaPad S9 or one of the Gateway / HP / Acer machines.

Actually, if anybody manages to get TunerStudio (or something like it) running under Android, I will immediately go out and buy a Droid tablet.

Tablets have their place.

When I was in Birmingham a few months ago doing an install, the Chief had an iPad which he used for the sole purpose of keeping all of the rack-room documentation on. He had the PDF manuals for every piece of gear in the room on it, along with the wiring spreadsheets, the configuration tables for everything, etc.

You still needed a "real" laptop (one running Windows and equipped with wired ethernet and and a USB-RS232 cable) to actually connect to most of the machinery and run the configuration software, but as a reference and documentation tool, the iPad struck me as a really clever solution. I expect that any decent Android device would have worked equally well.

Now that I've retired my Sony Vaio TX (11" laptop) from business use, I find that I tend to keep it at home next to the sofa and use it for basic web-surfing, logging into the forum, etc. It's extremely convenient. A tablet would suffice for the web-surfing part, but I suspect I'd hate it for things like typing posts on a forum.
