Been too busy since then to go any further with it.

In the process of working with a guy that owns a ------- 10 bay auto body shop FILLED with parts, tools, equipment, etc. Also has trailers filled and a little fenced in lot filled with complete cars. Insane amount of ---- yet again.

Not to mention they've needed me at the concrete shop a few days this week, so that sucked up any free time I had.

Hopefully in the next week or two I'll make the decision. I have been reading up more on a sole prop though. Def not out of the question.

 

Jeep had to go in for inspection. CEL on, because of the damned emissions. $3000 later, I get it back only to have the rear caliper lock up. At least they replaced that for free. DO NOT buy a Jeep Liberty. Don't even take one as a gift.

 

Brewing my first batch of home brew beer right now. Wish me luck.

 

Watch for boilover. It's gonna happen.

 

Yeah I keep running to look every 30 seconds. In fact, halfway through writing this post I ran and caught a boilover.

(This reminds me that it's been waaaaay too long since I've fired up the kettle. I need to get a new set of carboys...)

Anyway, a little secret to help not only with boilover, but with krausen blowoff in the primary if you happen to have a particularly active fermentation going:



Fermcap-S. This stuff is a miracle liquid. You'll find it at nearly every homebrew shop, often private-labeled. It's made from a blend of dimethylpolysiloxane and unicorn tears, and just 2 drops per gallon added at the start of the boil will make your life a thousand times easier.

 

Wait, what about krausen blowoff? That stuff helps with stove top boilover as well as something during primary fermentation? Also, since its my first time I'm making a generic brew. 2 x 3.3 lb cans on Muntons hopped amber malt extract, 1 oz. Cascade hop pellets at 40 min. and then another oz. at 58 min. (60 min. total boil time), and 2 x 11.5 g packs of Safale US-05 dry ale yeast.

EDIT: I think I'm actually only going to do 1 pack of yeast.

 

Well, yeast are kind of like frat boys, in that they can sometimes get carried away. After you pitch the yeast and seal up the fermenter, the yeast kind of look around and say "Bloody hell, what's this? We're completely surrounded by a sticky, brown liquid. Hold on a minute, is this... can it be? It's sugar! Party over here!"

And then they proceed to start gorging themselves, devouring everything in sight and producing a hell of a lot of foam. After a few days they kind of tire themselves out and start settling down, but if you are starting with a high-gravity brew or an especially active strain of yeast, you can get this:



(That's a fairly extreme example- usually it just blows the airlock out.)

Anyway, I assume you're using something like a 7 gal pail, and your recipe below seems fairly tame, so don't freak out about it, I'm just saying that some people who do big, heavy brews with dickyead yeast find that Fermcap keeps the krausen under control, and can even eliminate the need for a blowoff tube when using a small primary, such as a glass carboy.

For dry yeast, add to a glass of warm sugar water before you boil. That gets it started, so by the time you pitch, it's hydrated and starting to grow.

I use the cheap yeast all the time. Works for me.

 

I was going to suggest a starter, but I figured it was too late. (And it's one more thing to sanitize...)

Thanks for the advice. I just checked and my OG is 1.042 so not exactly a high gravity beer. I'll look for those drops though. And as far as the yeast, I decided not to do a starter for simplicity's sake. I pitched one 11.5 g pack and am letting them sit for 10-15 min. and then I give it a good stir to aerate.

 

Why do I have the shittiest ------- luck. I'm guessing yesterday during storms that came through, while I was out of town for the day, my electronics were hit by lightning or a power surge of some kind that fucked something up. My receiver is acting weird. It will play AM/FM, but none of the HDMI inputs work, or detect a signal. I thought maybe it was just my receiver finally taking a ---- on me, so I hooked my PS3 to my TV directly with HDMI. It displays fine, but some of the audio doesn't work, which is really weird to me. In games, only some audio works, other audio is missing. No audio is heard when using Netflix. 360 either isn't working, or the receiver also doesn't detect it. TV seems to work fine though. WHAT THE ----!?

Gas grill, which is about 10 years old, is rusting out. So, I bought a rock grate and burner for it. About 70 bucks in parts, plus a bag of new lava rock, which will run me another $5.

I can get a brand new grill, same brand and nearly the same model for 99 dollars at Home Depot.

 

Gas grill is fail anyway. Charcoal is how real men cook.

 

Wife wants gas; she does the grilling. I eat.

Liquid laundry detergent. Dribble some on the spots, wait a while, hose off. Reseal spots with driveway sealer.
