They brought the revised version to DefCon last year (I think it was last year...) So I'm standing there looking at this thing, and cue random completely oblivious woman who rolls up and plugs in. Screens start flashing red warnings and she stands there and continues her call. I really wish I had not destroyed my old Blackberry, the video was awesome, especially while other attendees kept trying to warn her and she waived them off.

I feel great sadness for my loss today. The light bulb in my upstairs bedroom closet burned out today. I would wager that that bulb has been in that socket for the better part of 20 years. When I flipped the switch and saw the flash of it burning up, I felt a little pain in my chest. RIP bulb... Now I can go upgrade to a $30 LED

Does anyone know which is the thread that deals with adjusting the idle so that rpms don't drop drastically when accessories are turned on?

 

so this week i plan to install the ms and convert the car to e85 before going turbo. people say you will need to change the filter and the fuel pump strainer after a tank or so of ethanol. so should i 1. install the ms and assorted other pieces and run e85 on the stock pump and filter and change out for everything that i have sitting around after a tank or so? or 2. put all new lines, filter,pump and strainer in and replace it after the first tank or so?

 

So the question is whether you should replace everything twice, or only once?

Almost have my FD alternator installed. I popped another set of headlights this morning on the way to work. For the last few months I have been having issues with bulbs blowing out, and for the last few weeks it has been more visible that I have voltage spikes. Driving along in the dark I will see the headlights flicker brighter for just a fraction of a second. It almost looks like I was driving through a little puffy streak of fog. This morning as I was accelerating onto the interstate I saw a pretty bright flash, followed by a REALLY bright flash. The lights were probably twice as bright as normal for about 1/2 second, then they both popped. My reasonably educated guess would be bad or failing voltage regulator. I've had this high amp FD alt laying around forever, so I figure its time.

Unbolt the old, remove it and lay them side by side to compare. Had a minor freak out when I realized the threaded half of the main attachment point was on the opposite side (back vs the front on the stock alt). I then realized it didn't matter, just feed the bolt through the other way, from the front to the back, which is easier the reach anyway. So, no problem I think as I feed the bolt through... the ******* bolt is too short by about 3/4". ****! The FD alternator has a beefier rear attachment point, where the nut is embedded to thread the main bolt through. So the nut was back a good bit further. Lucky for me, one of the few times my old car nut and bolt hoarding has paid off, I found an old FB or FC RX7 bolt in a rusty old bucket that was the right shaft diameter and correct thread pitch, and even had the same size head! Now I'm just waiting for a ride to the parts store to pick up a new belt. The stock belt is a little bit too short. The stock NA bracket has a little piece sticking out that most people have said may have the be ground off. I don't feel like ******* with it, so it stays. It will however move freely in the outer most 1/3 of the adjustment range, which is a bit too far out for the belt to stretch. So a belt of maybe 1/2" larger diameter should work alright. Still allowing for enough movement to get the belt tension set correctly.

I'm still a bit puzzled by the two wire connector. I've heard people say the one on the Miata harness won't plug into the FD alternator, but mine does. Not sure if the wires are correct however. I'm also not sure as to if it is okay to leave unplugged all together. From what I can see in diagrams, all they do is power the warning light on the dash. Though one wire does seem to go to the 30amp fused INJ fuse... Does this alternator need an exciter wire or a signal? Will it just run at a default voltage without any wires going to it? I"m guessing 13.8ish volts? Any input would be appreciated.

How's that for a long ramble about nothing. Now to see if this alternator actually works.

Woot. Works like a charm. AND, different from everything I've read and seen, the 2 wire connector plugs up securely and works the same on the FD alternator as it did the stock alternator. 95% plug and play, minus the tensioner limited play and the slightly longer belt. Seems like it'll be fine, and it also seems to have smoothed out the idle drops from lights and a/c.

 

How do you give away a car?

Am I safe to assume that signing over the title with a bill of sale, turning in the plates and removing it from insurance is all there is to it?
