I'm building my rear poverty-CX wheel tomorrow night and doing another clinic on Sunday, races start Wednesday.

I think you'd like to know that I look like a total fairy when dismounting, kicking my left leg out like I'm hurdling. lol

You were right though, CX is awesome.

 

I had to work out of town and made that a 10-day break from cycling. Other than that, I'm just logging miles and going HAM whenever possible. I finally got a reliable wheel-set on the road bike and no need to talk about gear, everything is where it needs to be. I'll probably end up with a better CX bike next year, but it's going to be a while. The CAADx is a noodle, heavy as hell, aluminum steerer tube is way way way flexy, and did I mention it's heavy? I should have gone with the Trek Crocket, Boone, or Super-X. But whatever, I have a CX bike and I'm going to crush.

I just picked-up some Clement LAS rubbers for the CX bike, that's worthy of discussion.

Nicely done.

 

Just did my first "mock" CX race at only 15-minutes. I don't know how the **** these guys do it. I finished near the back, holy ****.

 

Places more a premium on anaerobic power than group rides. Helps to have good general bike handling as well as cross specific skills. Cross is the cycling equivalent of autocrossing continuously for an hour, bouncing of the rev limiter the whole time.

 

YES! I was so beat, so tired, heart palpitations just to stay with the pack, but I could still make-up huge gaps in the technical section, passing 3-5 people at a time on corner entry on the brakes.

I came home and immediately ordered wider bars (same as road bike) and Clement MXPs (replacing Sammy Slick). I can see CX becoming a regular thing for me. I went with a couple who raced Ducatis for a while and we had fun bumping and throwing soft elbows in the start drills into the first corner.


I think I need to adjust my max HR. I saw 181bpm and that's the highest I've seen, ever, I thought I was going to die like usual. Can I make this my max heart-rate or should I still estimate it a bit higher?

Your max heart rate should be the highest you see. It may be on the low side but if it is an underestimate, you will see a higher number later.

****, someone took video at the CX practice race last night and I look totally stupid, lol.

 

Anyone have any poverty level road biking groupset stuff available. I've got an ancient felt that I'm going to be riding a century on. Was considering upgrading a few pieces and realized the old tiagra stuff I have on the bike is so ancient that really... the whole groupset has to go.

Would be just fine with current era tiagra or sora, 105 would be great, but i certainly don't need it. LMK if anyone has anything sitting around they'd like to turn into cash monies.

 

Very pretty but after you have ridden a modern composite bike with 1.5/1.25 steerer and 15mm through axle, this 20 yr old frame tech feels wobbly, dated, heavy and hard riding.

Bump absorption is king in cross. You corner harder, stop harder, put the wattage down on bumpy exits and are less fatigued.

 

I know, and I really hate the CAADx I bought but it will get the job done. My next will probably be a Super-X, or day I say it...Crux. The triangle from DT, ST, and TT for shouldering does not work and I can't grab the bars properly so I just grab the wheel. It's also rough, heavy, but it will be fine for a few years until Shimano makes poverty hydro stuff and through-axle arrives for the proletariat. The wheels I watched and help build on the cheap were a nice upgrade.
