You're gay. Combustion chamber psi is already at like 200psi before combustion.

Retune your forester on 87, report back with logs and gas mileage results.

frankly it sucks to drive cars like that too. turbo diesels in europe, tiny turbo gas engine cars, whatever. they feel very nonlinear or even regressive. like there's no point in using more revs.

the mini is a little like that. i want to put a bigger snail on it. not much bigger, just one that spools above 2500.

Two of my close friends have 1.8t gti's. I hate driving them. One is a k03 @ 15psi and the other is a k04 @ 24psi. Driving around town is horrid in both cars. Boost comes on so fast that you roast 1st through 3rd just trying to get up to highway speed. I hate the stupid electronic throttle body that VW uses. Seriously, it's either none of it or ALL OF IT. No in between.

I have a Ko3s. So it's not as bad as the Ko4 on tires. But I still can't full throttle in first, and only second when it's completely dry. 3rd-5th is really fun though. The nice thing about this turbo is in 5th and 35 mph I don't have to shift to go up a hill... or pass someone, it just pulls. I completely agree about the throttle body. And the maintenance comment is a little funny, because the maintenance is unbelievably bad. They also suck to work on. As a friend puts it "Because Volkswagen." I do love the car for a daily though.

What you've just described is 98% of <30 Honda crowed at an auto-x, their linear throttle turns binary.

I agree completely about tinyturbo VWs. Neighbor has one, part throttle driving up the street he's at full boost before the car has traveled 10 feet. Not fun to drive.

Friend just picked up a TDi and first time I rode in it I kept telling him to get his foot out of it. All I heard was turbo turbo turbo. Then he told me he was barely giving it any throttle.

In stock form it wont boost until half throttle, it only does half boost though. It wont do full boost until > 75% throttle.

In stock form, I actually liked my mom's 1.8t passat. It wasn't quick, but it had enough to keep me entertained, and their electronic boost control does a pretty good job making it feel like a bigger engine than it is.

If it's anything like the Volkswagen CC I drove a couple of years ago, it did in fact feel like it had a much bigger engine. Specifically, one of the coal-fired steam engines from the HMS Dreadnought. You request an increase in throttle, and then some period of time later the engine room responds and you begin to accelerate.

I did kind of notice that, but not to the same extent you describe. It was certainly more responsive than my current turbo, though the immediate throttle response off-boost was always hampered by the useless manumatic transmission equipped on that car. At least I blamed it on that, perhaps it was the engine.

Funny how perceptions are different: some people complaining about spool up being too quick and Joe complaining about lag.

/\ beat me to it. +1

This thread makes me laugh.
Just about everyone on here is rocking a 2554 or 2560 turbo because they want as much torque under curve as they can get, then we talk about a car that makes ALL of it under the curve, and suddenly everyone hates it. There is no winning.

(though I think Joe was talking about transient throttle response not lag)

If I could set it up to work properly, I would have anti lag running during cruise.

Yeah, it was definitely the mapping of the "throttle" that screwed me up, not the turbo. At low rates of pedal application (such as when starting from a stop) there was a noticeable latency in the response of the engine to input from the pedal, which made it seem as though there was a dead-band at the top of the pedal's range. My natural reaction to this was to then apply more pedal more abruptly, whereupon the car would lurch forward.

Very annoying, and very uncivilized in what otherwise appeared to be a highly refined and costly sedan.

This was a Euro-spec diesel, so maybe the US-spec petrol cars are different. I've not driven one here in the states.

drive by wire is a magnificent thing when you're able to adjust/tune it.
on 32bit ecu subarus its a map with rpm and throttle angle on the axis and requested torque as the values in the cells. PURE GENIOUS. tune it to your liking and you get even laggy un-responsive subaru's to react to your inputs almost like a high strung honda. seriously impressive. wish you were closer to us Joe so you could drive my forester. I think you'd be impressed.

I dunno wtf you're even trying to say in here.
But my response is:
I make 200wtq before 3k rpm, your argument is invalid.
COME AT ME BRO
