Default ITALIAN Cruise Captain

NY Times article on communication between the captain and the Italian Coast Guard.

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/201...italian-media/

"Everything OK?” a port official asked in one early radio exchange.

“Affirmative,” Mr. Schettino said, adding that the ship had only a “small technical failure.”

Reached later by radio, he repeated that “We’ve only got a technical problem” and assured a port official that “as soon as it’s resolved, we’ll communicate to you.”

The boat is sinking, no big deal.

Tis better to be in jail and alive than in a ship and drowned, no?

Why would he drown from a small technical failure?

The radio communications don't really show much. I read through the one that was supposed to put him off the boat before all the evacuations were done. But how do you KNOW when everyone is off? It's a big boat... he can't go through and check, that is dumb.

That is what I read earlier. There must be witnesses to tell exactly what happened. If he left when there were people obviously still on board then okay, but if it looked like everyone was off what is he supposed to do? I mean honestly I don't go on boats so I don't know. Does he have to just stay on the ship until the end if there are people trapped inside?

AFAIK, the captain is responsible for all the passengers and is supposed to be the last one off the ship. He had to know there were people still on board. He said he was overseeing evacuation and rescue, but you don't do that from a lifeboat.

Ah yea it does seem as though he is on another ship way before anything. Not looking good for this guy.

I almost feel bad for him - he's going to jail for being a fool and a coward, but at least he's still alive.

I'm sure he feels like ---- now. I honestly don't think him being on board would have changed much. He should not be able to be employed with anything dealing with boats, but other than that idk.

You should look up what he did prior to being a captain...

Mr Schettino joined Costa Cruises in 2002, initially as an official in charge of security. He was promoted to the role of captain in 2006, having been second-in-command.
