Econ 101. Insurance foots the bill for the fancy drugs that the patient gets for $1. Where do you think the Insurance company makes up that "loss". They raise premiums. There's a reason the great current health care system we have now has decreased benefits and quality while increasing rates 30%+ last year, and over %100 since '01.

it ultimately (used to?) screws insurance companies too. doctor says "here have a coupon so you pay only $1 for your fancy $500 drugs instead of the generics for $10, but then the insurance company still has to pay the difference for the medication if the name brands are $500 and the generics are $50. Wonder where the money for that comes from.... hmmm.
no defense of insurance practice here.

On a personal note, I am in a high deductible plan and would have to pay 100% of the bill (until we hit $5,000 in costs). Since I am not a girly-man like you I do not get sick and therefore save money by doing it this way.

Side note: I used to wrestle when I was a kid. One time I was going to a tournament and had to lose 2 pounds in 2 hours. I did it by chewing a huge mouthful of Big Red gum and spitting into a large cup (16 oz of spit = 1 pound). After spitting into a cup for 2-3 hours I made my weight class. Of course, I promptly got my *** stomped because I was dehydrated as hell. In the end it just stunted my growth and made me the disgusting troll that I am today (but at least I have a good story to tell)...
