The URLs in question seem to be dynamically generated at the time Scott looks at the image, work for a finite length of time, and then expire. That's my current theory.

Maybe you're doing it wrong.

Open the photos.google.com page
navigate to the photo you want
click the meiosis button
click get shareable link
copy the link text
ctrl-L, ctrl-V, enter to browse to it
click the oversized, unnecessary interim thumbnail
right click the full size image
select "copy image url"
paste it here between img tags.
