My kitties went out at the crack of dawn, like they always do. Only one came back. We've been kinda worried, as it's been quite cold out.
So, second cat (Altin) finally shows up around dinner time. He's had this spot on his head where he was scratched, and it looked like it was healing up okay. Tonight, he comes in, and his forehead is all swollen, and this wound is all nasty looking, like he tore it open. Infected for sure. I am bleeding from trying to get him into the carrier. Wife is on the way to the vet as I type this. I'm pretty sure this is going to cost big bucks, as it's the after hours place.

Is he fixed, as in castrated?
My last outdoor tomcat was a veritable thug around the neighborhood, coming home with slashes and then days later would have abscessed wounds from unseen claw punctures, predominantly to his face. Our vet became so acquainted with me and Pwitz, from our all to frequent visits, that he eventually gave me a few scalpels and hypodermic needles to save me the trip (i.e. lancing his wounds open and drawing out puss myself). He said when you get tired of it, just bring him in to be clipped and it will put and end to most of it. He was right.
BTW, for no matter other than bragging rights, he did say that since his wounds were always to his face, chest, and shoulders, that he was undoubtedly the winner (and likely aggressor), else they would be present on his flanks if he were in retreat/surrender.
I hope Altin gets well soon.

Yup, he's fixed. But he's a big, solid kitty (~18#), and he's been an outdoor cat all his life. His housemate B.B. (short for Big Boy) is also fixed (and also a large kitty), and he comes back all torn up sometimes, too.
A few years ago, B.B. took down a full grown raccoon that had moved into the area, He took some damage, but we found the raccoon dead a couple days later.
They're just fighters, I guess.

Back from the vet at 10PM. Wound was shaved, lanced, drained, flushed. Gave him some antibiotics and pain meds. Said it looked like a bite, probably another cat. Wound area looks nasty, but they said to keep putting compresses on it to keep it open and help drain.
He's pretty pissed about the cone, but acting much better even just half a day later. Much more affectionate. It was obviously causing distress.
Whole thing cost me just over 4 bills.
