Vet came to the house. Was very professional, but also compassionate. Talked softly to him as he put in the line, petting and comforting him.

Wife is a wreck, as is to be expected.

 

Sux man. Really sorry to hear that.

Took my wife a while to get over Chewie passing away, too young and too awesome. I had to be the strong one.

 

Aaaand that is the end of y8s today.

I feel for you and your family and the late kitty.

 

:( very sad. Funny how these goofy creatures control our lives.

 

I don't see how you could go back to work. I bet if I even had to *think* about putting down any of mine, I'd be utterly useless.

Yeah, it was tough. But work is unusually busy, and it helped keep me from dwelling on it.

Belle is so photogenic.

 

A bit late, but sorry to hear about this none the less. It sucks losing the furry friends.

Almost lost this one several times over her life. We call her Mama Kitty, as she never officially got a name as a kitten, and it went for so long that it felt wrong naming her, as we just called her kitty. Then she had kittens, and it became Mama Kitty. She is more of my mothers cat, which she has had for about 13 years now, back when I was still living with her. One of her kittens became mine, and I had him for 3 or 4 years until I moved out. Once I moved out, I guess he was distraught by my moving away, and he ran off and became feral. She saw him a few times over the following year or two, when he was hiss at her and run back off into the neighborhood. I loved that cat so much, and hate that he ran off like that. Had I known he would have reacted that way, I would have taken him with me, but I figured he would be fine continuing living with her in a familiar environment.

Caught her stalking in the dark in the back yard tonight while I was over for a visit. She is a master small creature catcher.



My cat, officially named Kitty (since his mother was upgraded to Mama Kitty) but since visitors were uncomfortable with him being called a generic name, he was often called Thomas or Tommy. His favorite place was sleeping on my keyboard while I tried to type, or my chest while I tried to sleep. He would groom my hair in the morning to wake me up. Damn I miss that little fella.

 

speaking of sadnes and kitties...

I need to give Riley prednisone every day and he USUALLY takes it in a pill pocket, but lately he's not been interested in them. To get him to eat them, I have to shove a Zukes treat in it too. Sometimes this works, sometimes not.

Anyone have any better options?

I have never had much success giving any of my cats a pill. They just have to be forced. Vet showed me a technique where you get their mouth open, and just kinda chuck it down their throat.

Went to the Pet Adoption Network center on Sunday. This is the place I got the two cats from before, in 2006. Saw a gorgeous yellow tabby who was very nice. Unfortunately, she had a post-it note on the cage stating she was going to her new home that afternoon. Several other possibilities, but we're going to have to do home visits to make sure my other cat is compatible with them.

This place uses Advantage, donated from a local vet. No fleas. I do have to say that they all looked well cared for. Going to the local Humane Society place, some of the pets (recent rescues) looked downright scary. And that's the ones up for adoption. The worst ones weren't even out in the front.

Several of the cats were very friendly, but most just lay there. One in particular looked frightened to be there. I'm in contact with one of the "foster parents", and we're discussing which ones would be a good fit. One guy was very friendly, but he's known to have some trouble with other cats.

He was waiting for his toy to move so he could pounce on it, and fell asleep.

 

Absolutely. For many many months, I had to administer pills twice a day for my cat (before I ultimately had to have her put down ). As she was basically being treated for not eating, putting her meds into food was useless. After just a few days of 'forcing' a pill down her throat, she became completely intolerant and the exercise turned into an absolute nightmare.

SO, after complaining to the vet, they tipped me off to the simple tool they use. It's called a pill gun or pill pusher. I think they are available in a few sizes, but I used a smallish model called the "Pet Piller":



The thing about that video though, is that the cat shown is basically so docile that you could just as easily use your finger there. With my cat, she would bite, fight, and spit; BIG TIME! For me, this tool made it very quick and reliably got the pill 'over the tongue', making the process far less traumatic for the both of us.

With my feisty kid though, unlike the video, I developed a simple technique that worked out quite well. I had to preload the tool, come up behind her and kneel down with my legs straddling her so she couldn't back away, then with just a few swift motions I could open her mouth with one hand, insert and release the pill with the other, and quickly close her mouth and hold her chin up until she swallowed. It may sound somewhat harsh, but it became so quick she learned to tolerate it quite well.
