The point should mainly be of the "giving" - not what, how much, or does she deserve it?
If a "gift" has certain stipulations; doesn't it then become a bribe?
I really think the main intent was for him to buy something that he was too embarrassed to admit he wanted, but used her as a martyr. So, when she does the inevitable, it will be his by justifiable cause.

When I was 16 my mother wouldnt let me buy a car with my own money, so I bought one anyway and parked it down the street. I got busted a few month later. but I had my first car, and I did it myself.
I told my step-daughter I would match whatever she saved for a car, 4 years later and she still has no car, her plan is to maipulate us into giving her a car. its a bad plan.
