MT.net Motorcycle Thread

I don't think we have one, so here we go.
Every forum I'm on has tons of biker lovers, and the threads are absolutely great.

I'm not a huge bike fanatic or track junkie like some here, but I love my bikes. Been riding (friends bikes) for a few years, but only got my own last year. 07 kawi 500r. LOVED IT aside from it being carburated. Perfect "beginner/middleweight" bike all around by far IMHO.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...e/IMG_0285.jpg

Just picked up a Triumph TT600. Its a beast up top, but lacks the grunt down low, so I don't think I'll be riding it too long. Maybe a year maybe less. Ultimately I want an 08+ SV650 or 06-08 Kawi 650r. Something light, nimble, and with midrange.

Fireindc 10-23-2010 04:27 AM

Awesome thread, good first post too. I started riding dirtbikes when I was 14 or so, and got my first streetbike a Ninja500 when I was 18, rode that for 3 years before picking up my Buell xb12s. I also love light, torquey, flickable bikes. You should check out Buell, don't write one off until you actually get to ride one. They are surprisingly VERY affordable right now, even for an 1125r. I rode my first one last year and fell completely in love, sold my ninja immediately, and bought my current project bike. The other bike I ride is a 883 sporster. Its pretty much a bobber right now, and I have plans to do it up dirt track/cafe racer style with a 1250 kit.

Sorry for lower q pics, Iphone pics are all I've got.

It's actually on the trailer right now. Last trackday of the season is tomorrow.

After that, I'm parting it out and selling it. Already sold the slipper clutch. After the last trackday two weeks ago and watching seven people pile up their bikes Saturday and six Sunday, I decided that $10K is more than I want to risk tossing down the track so I'm selling it, buying an older CBR that is an ex-rack bike and has all of the mods that I want for $3400 and a V-Strom for a DD. I have two miles of gravel before I hit pavement and it's a white knuckle ride on the Daytona so the V-Strom with dirt tires will be a great DD for me. Plus, the total of the two bikes will be less than the Daytona.

mgeoffriau 10-23-2010 10:35 PM

Don't own a motorcycle, and have never ridden. It's a huge temptation for me, but because of an extended family member's death on a motorcycle, I've basically decided to keep my gearhead energy directed at cars. However, if I stumbled on a stupidly good deal on one of these, I might just buy it now and keep it hidden:

My 1982 Yamaha Maxim XS400. Cheap on insurance, easy to fix, and great on gas. My dad's 99 Honda Shadow 1100 can barely be seen in the back. I grew up on dirt bikes and finally decided to get into street bikes about a year ago. When I picked up my bike it looked like this:
http://www.dbmiata.com/yamaha/DSC00413.JPG

Plans for this winter include:
- rebuilding spare motor I have
- powdercoat spare gas tank and wheels
- new tires
- new rear shock (single rear shock design)

Just recently I rebuilt the brake master and had a braided front brake line made up.

The only issues I have with buell is
1)they're discontinued (which is the same for my tt600 though unfortunately)
2) most if not all are naked or semi-naked.

I like full fairing bikes.

They look/sound great from looking at pictures and videos though.

That looks badass, and LOTS of local folks are actually converting their 4cyl superbikes to "street fighter" style.

I was looking at r6's when I picked up the tt but the newest ones are still quite a bit out of my budget for a bike right now, and I don't like the older ones much.

My XS400 is ridiculously reliable. I beat the hell out of it, and it still revs to 11000rpm no problem. My buddy has a 2002 Kawasaki 500 and my bike goes better then his. Of course, he has no idea how to ride :p But yah, the old yamaha tears through the curves pretty good, and it's relatively comfy. Only problem is that there is absolutely no shielding from the wind.

I think if I was going to get a new bike it would be this:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_J3_liDBfbv...-Wallpaper.jpg

I really like the Kawasaki versys. But I'm going to hang on to my yamaha for a while. It was really an experiment when it came out - rear mono shock design, frameless engine design (motor just hangs - no frame in the front). Apparently the bike got awesome reviews when it came out, but they only made it for 2 years.

18psi 10-24-2010 01:11 AM

The versys is great for lane splitting cause they're so narrow (here that's legal btw)
Also 650cc designed specifically for 3-6k rpm torque is awesome in a commuter.

curb weight is a bit disappointing at 450+ though

Cool videos, those bikes are insane. Wayy too much power for the type of riding i do.

I'm either commuting 10 miles into town on tiny backroads, or carving one of 4 available canyons within a 40 miles radius.

more like this, no highway around here.

Turbo xb12 ftw, 160whp, 140ft/lb.

And it THIS video we watch some squids riding buells almost die.

Seriously fucking pathetic.

I have some plans to boost mine eventually, once it stops scaring the shit out of me as is.

curly 10-24-2010 02:54 AM

1985 Suzuki GS700es. Look up some stock photos, it's changed a lot. Only thing to identify it is the ignition cover and stator cover. I've thought about a more complex paint scheme, but I just don't have the skills.

Dustin, take some sand paper to your tank before powdercoating it. The oven will melt any bondo that's been added in the past 28 years. Happened to me with a CB750 cafe build.

18psi 10-24-2010 02:59 AM

Cool. I'll look it up.

That's some nice canyon carving. Buell sounds great too, I love low pitched rumble V twins/L twins/parallel twins.

We have TONS of roads like that here too, but they're infested with police on just about every corner.

Its sad really:(

Wow, that sucks. My brother lived in Sacramento for a few years and was telling me how fascist the police are out there, especially when it comes to anything automotive.

Its basically the exact opposite out here. Almost nobody is into motorsports/canyon carving and instead they roll around on stupid shiny hogs and lame low riders. You almost never run into police in the local canyons here. However, down in Albuquerque (south of here) its a different story I hear.

Heres a pic before we left to head up to bikes blue and bbq in Fayetteville, AR.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1419/...e6d2a5ab_b.jpg
Right to left: My roomates SV1000S, Friends R1, other roommates RC51, his brothers 600RR and finally the really cool bike in the group is my GS500 on the end.:giggle:

Sad because 2 hours after this picture we were loading the SV roommate into an ambulance and his bike into a truck bed.

I bought a suzuki gs500 because I thought it would be a good beginner bike and I didn't want to kill myself from having too much bike. My roommate went out a week later and bought a v-twin sv1000s.:vash: I always joked with him about you might have a better bike but atleast mine will be in one piece a month from now. Well 2 weeks after buying his we went up to a bike rally and he layed his over in a corner. Sucks but hes ok and there really isn't that much wrong with the bike.

Fireindc 10-24-2010 03:31 AM

Sorry to hear that. Exactly why I rode an ex500 for 2 years before moving up.

And damn sexy rc51 there. I want to get one of those to have in the stable next to my Buell in a few years.

18psi 10-24-2010 03:33 AM

same EXACT thing happened here man.

I went and got my 07 ninja ex 500r in 1st post. paid 2k for it.

A buddy of mine went to the stealership and got a BRAND NEW Kawasaki Ninja zx6r.
I couldn't believe it, a brand new bike for 8500 out the door, for his FIRST BIKE:eek5:

3 weeks later he laid it down. Had to get new fairings, tank, and turn signals.

Just a month ago he let another friend ride it. HE LAID IT DOWN. So now that bike has plastics from 3 different bikes and has been taken apart and repainted 2 times.

and it barely has 3k miles on it.

some people are just foolish

Golferluke 10-24-2010 03:43 AM

Yup, I bought my bike for $600 with new tires and running but a little rough. Replaced the coils my self, cleaned carbs and put a new chain on. Had a vacuum leak some where so I took it to a shop and had the brakes worked on, carbs redone/balanced, valves adjusted and some other minor bits for $100. For $750 its running perfectly with new tires, fully tuned up and new chain. Its nothing pretty to look at but its a blast and if I lay it over I'll probably be more upset about scratching my helmet and jacket. Not to mention I can probably get close to $1500 out of it now that its running perfect and has clean title. Sound investment in my book.

EDIT:
I guess I can go into a little more damage detail.
Rider:
Left hand was scraped on the top pretty pretty bad. Could see all the way to the tendons on all 4 fingers.
Left ankle was scraped down to bone, could see about *this much* of his the ankle bone. *makes "OK" symbol*
Right foot was smashed under the bike and was sprained. Because it was under the exhaust his shoe was REALLY melted.
little road rash on lower back and right leg but nothing major
General aches, bruises and smashed ego associated with a wreck.

Bike:
Broken mirror
Broken clutch lever
Broken peg
Broken shift lever
Scraped up front fairing but really thats it

I give him shit all the time for being cheap (he actually is jewish but i'll leave that alone lol) but it really cost him. He was wearing a helmet (tore up in the back, thank god he had that atleast, he might not be here) fleece joe rocket jacket (borrowed from rc51 roomate) blue jeans, running shoes and motox gloves (also from other roomate.)

If he would of had good gear and boots he wouldn't of had more than a bruised ego.

They couldn't be more different.

The VFR is a little different for a Honda. It has tons of torque, but is heavy. It was a good bit of work to hustle it around TWS back in June, and I decided I wasn't going back without bringing something light. What was nice is basically leaving it in 3rd gear and worrying about lines and body position instead of shifting. It would pull through the Carousel, a 30mph turn at about 2K rpm, and just barely top 3rd gear at the end of the straightaway, or atleast at the speed I wanted to be at going into turn 1.

The SV is LIGHT...and I mean light. It reminds me of why I started riding. Excellent control, minimal effort, more upright seating position, still has useful torque although not a freight train like the VFR.

I mainly swapped for comfort and a bike I'd enjoy a little more in the twisties. The VFR 750s have a more aggressive riding position than the newer 800s, and I've ridden an 800 with HeliBars that I could live with daily, but they're out of my price range. One day...

I also wanted a beater bike...one I didn't have to worry about. The SV has no fairings...I wouldn't be devastated if it got stolen or wrecked...and it's stupid easy to work on (5min oil changes).

I was looking at r6's when I picked up the tt but the newest ones are still quite a bit out of my budget for a bike right now, and I don't like the older ones much.

I prefer the newer ones, but I got that for a steal. The only bad part is the 1gen R6, have a bad second gear, but the 53 tooth rear spocket, I could start in third without a problem. Also made the bike crazy scary on the interstate, as it would stand up in 6th on it own.

I always liked the full fairing look. My plan was to sell/trade the street fighter kits for stock fairing, but that never happened. Current plan is to just get a 02 or newer. Prefer the newer 06+ but they still go for 4-5K.

I now have a

http://motoprofi.com/bikephoto/3163/...509_1997_2.jpg.
This one is not mine, but mine looks just like this one with high mount pipes.

It's a 98 Triumph Speed Triple. I am friends with the local Ducati dealership and I get to ride all their demo bikes. The new Streetfighter and the old Monster S4RS are eating me up. Alas, don't have enough money to buy a another bike.

turbofan 10-25-2010 01:55 AM

I had always said I wouldn't own a street bike, but a year ago I bought my first one:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...3_274579_n.jpg

2006 Buell XB12R. I bought my bike last october. While I was going to school full time and working part time, i put 1100 miles on it the first week I owned it :fawk: ALPINE LOOP was amazing, almost every day! But I wasn't making the money I needed, so I sold her in January. Put 5k miles on her in 3 months, sold her for what I paid ;) but I miss her so much!

Dad has an XB12sTT and an 1125CR. I love the CR, that thing hits warp speed like nothing I've ever felt. but the XB12sTT is a little too old man-ish for me. I love the CR, that liquid cooled twin just catapults that bike, it's unbelievable. dry weight of about 375 lbs. What an amazing machine! But my XB12R's handling was absolutely rock solid, that thing was absolutely flickable and a total torque monster.

Parts will be tough to find soon, but my dad bought his XB12sTT for $7k brand new, and he only paid $6500 for his brand new 1125. Can't get them for that anymore though!

One day I'll have another bike..... One day...

I want a Triumph Sprint ST.

18psi 10-25-2010 02:07 AM

375 is a perfect weight imo. heavy enough not to be blown around on the freeway like a moped, yet lighter than most 600+ cc bikes.

Too bad buell is discontinued. Parts will start getting harder and harder to find so to all that have them here YOU BETTER STOCK UP on stuff you might need.

my tt600 was discontinued too, and while the company is still around its nearly impossible to find used parts for good price.

BY THE WAY:

I'll be starting major preventative maintenance on my bike next week. Anyone got any suggestions?

Already changed oil/filter.
Going to buy some chain lube next week.
Checked coolant and other fluids.
will be replacing air filter
will be replacing fuel filter
will be checking spark plugs
and lastly, I will be attempting to check/inspect (and if needed) synch the throttle bodies. I'll need the digital reader or 4 analogue gauges. Anyone know best place to get them on the cheap? I see them on egay for about 50 bux shipped. dunno if there are better deals than that.

anything else I'm forgetting?
Its got 7500 miles, so its fairly fresh, but manual says to check/replace all these things at 8k, so I figure 500 miles earlier won't hurt. Plus its raining cats and dogs here so its the perfect time to park the bike.

curly 10-25-2010 02:54 AM

Check autozone for rentable vacuum gauges. I didnt know you had to on throttle bodies. Do the valves need adjusting?

18psi 10-25-2010 03:01 AM

I'm having issues with the idle. So while doing preventative maint I'm going to try to diagnose some things too.

Here is my post about it from another forum, see if you can help in any way:

Hey there,
Bought my TT600 a month or two ago. Its got 7k miles on it, so fairly fresh. Or so I think at least.

So far all I've done is purchased an oem exhaust (its currently got a micron and a bit too loud for me) for it and changed the oil and filter.

Now before I describe the problem, I know the 00's are known for having poor ecu mapping problems, and have a "flat spot" down low.

Right after I bought it I took it into a Triumph dealer and had them flash in the "most recent" map onto it just to make sure that its up to date on that.

Here's the problem:

When I start it up in the morning, it will die within a second of firing. On the 2nd try it will sometimes fire up and stay on, sometimes die within a few seconds. Usually on the THIRD try or so it stays on.

Next it idles super low. Regardless of temperature. Cold start or hot re-start is ALWAYS the same rpm. Super low. Like a couple hundred, maybe more, but DEFINITELY less than 1k. Isn't it supposed to have a higher idle when cold and warming up??? (per manual stock idle supposed to be 1100 +/- 100)

It takes a LONG time to warm up. Like 10 minutes or more. Most of the time after 5 minutes of warming up the idle will dip EVEN lower and kinda sound like its running on 2 or 3 cylinders. If I rev it a bunch of times it somehow "clears up" and idles better.

Throttle tip in is HORRIBLE and when warming up when I touch it the bike usually dies.

Now when FULLY WARMED UP (usually takes a full 10 minutes of idling then at least another 5 minutes of riding) it gets a whole lot better. Still lazy throttle tip in but much better and the bike doesn't die at idle. Well, sometimes it does, but for the most part no.

I am going to not ride it for a month or two, park it, take off tank and plastics and REALLY get in there and hopefully get everything in tip top shape.

NOW

I don't want to just jump in and start replacing parts or messing with things, so I need some suggestions on what I'm looking for.
I've done a bit of research and the typical things usually mentioned are spark plugs, check for iacv leaks, vacuum line leaks at throttle bodies, air pump leaks, fuel tank clogged filter or line or something else, etc.

Any suggestions will be very helpful on how I should go about diagnosing the problem or what I should look out for.

Going through a repair manual I found for the bike, these symptoms point to a faulty (or sticking) IACS valve. Intake air control system. Known to get clogged and "stick" on these bikes.

Butt, a buddy of mine also suggested I check that my throttle bodies are in synch. Per manual the way to do that is to hook up said gauges. Then (since cyl#1 isn't adjustable) you fine tune the #2-4 tb's to match #1.

Fireindc 10-26-2010 05:21 AM

Interesting, hopefully you can get that figured out. This is why I love the simplicity of air cooled twins =P.

Before I got my Buell I was looking at the triumph speed four as well. Found a few for really decent prices, but decided against the maintenance and sound of a I4bike. I really <3 triumphs. Daytona 675 is definitely one of my dream bikes.

I got my first dirtbike at age 7, a Yamaha PW50. From there I've had:
Yamaha PW80 (age 9)
Kawasaki 90 (first bike with clutch, age 10)
'81 Suzuki TS100 (age 11, still have it)
'01 Kawasaki Ninja 250 (age 14, I put 1000 miles on it in our subdivision before I could get my license)
'96 Honda CBR 600F3 (age 16)
'01 Honda CBR 600F4i (age 17, totalled)
'03 Ducati Monster 620ie (age 18, still have it)
'03 Yamaha R6 (age 22, track bike)

I was building up the Miata to be a track car, but the college student budget was having none of it. I sold the car for $3500, bought the R6 for $2500, and now I can do plenty of trackdays on $300 sets of tires and get 25mpg on the track. Anyways, here's some of the pics:

Yeah, I've got a bike. I'm cool like that.

I ride sometimes when the weather is nice.

I take it to the dragstrip pretty regularly.

I also take it to the shows and swap meets.

Chicks dig it and dudes are jealous.

People offer me wads of cash for it whenever I take out because it is so rare.

It is a friggin' collector's item.

1982 Honda CT-70, bright red. Had it since it was new.

Bullshit. You don't have one.

If you do, how much do you want for it?

I've got a 2001 Ninja 250 (starter bike) and a 2002 HD VROD.

Although the Ninja 250 is a bit weak on the highway, it's a ton of fun on the twisties. The VROD though...wow. Above 5k rpms it just pulls.

TurboTim 10-27-2010 08:44 AM

If I had a dollar for every time I was asked that, I could buy another one.

I rode it on trails out in Colorado when we lived there and all over my grandparents' 500 acre farm in south Georgia as a kid.

It has a kick starter, a three gear transmission, and is dead reliable. I am really sentimental about it.

I don't ride on the street. I dabbled in street bikes years ago, but American drivers are so undisciplined that I am unwilling to risk it. I have people depending on me now.

I'm going to guess that it has something to do with this not being a motorcycle forum. I think that is a pretty safe guess.

Yeah, which is precisely why we have a "bs" subforum, and one of the stickied threads is "ramble on and on" which is not even remotely related to anything automotive, let alone something we actually own and are passionate about besides our cars.

Its whatever though. Not going to cry about it (well maybe just a little :giggle:)
