Default Ugly *** Platy-fish

Right outside a restaurant our host in Shenzhen, China we were taken to dinner to, was a fish tank with some fish with mouths that looked like a platypus.

Too bad we didn't order it, I'd have liked to find out what it tasted like.

The only fish I've seen that's uglier, is the frogfish.

Paddle Fish.

It is related to sturgeon, and is prized for its fish eggs. They exist here in the US, and there is supposed to be a species from China. Some think the Chinese species is extinct. The American species is making a comeback because of better fishery management.

Sturgeon eggs are what caviar is made from. I wonder if the "paddle fish" eggs are more valuable though.

What you would eat is a number of imports that may have been introduced back to China. The original Chinese species is the largest of them all, and have not been seen in a long time.

I have no idea if they are more valuable or not, but they do make cavier out of paddle fish eggs. I would think because of its rarity, they would be pretty damn pricey.
