VW will not want to implement a mandatory recall but in this case, because of the circumstances, the govt may force them too just to prove a point. At some point you will want to sell your car (guessing you have one of the affected ones?). How do you expect to do that if it isn't updated? |

On paper, it's already illegal to sell a car in most states if the emissions system has been tampered with. This isn't routinely enforced, but it would be relatively trivial for the DMV to implement a policy of running the VIN of any VW against a recall database whenever a title transfer is performed. |
Things aren't getting any easier for them; VW developed 4 separate defeat devices over 7 years.

So if I never sell my car, I will be fine? NM is a no-emissions-test state, with the exception of Bernalillo county. I have been wanting to do an exhaust and tune on it anyways, to get some more mpgeez and power. Since apparently it will be unsellable or something, I should just keep it and make more power lol.

A forced recall while possible, I have my doubts on it actually happening(or hopes maybe). Unless there is a penalty from the government, it will be really, really, REALLY hard to enforce.
