it's this point where I should mention that my dad (former not-famous race car driver/builder) once told me I could re-seat the rings in an old motor by pouring in the no-longer-existent "liquid bon ami" cleanser, letting the car run a few minutes, and then flushing the oil.

To be fair, bon ami is meant to be mild...

oh and just to keep joe famous:

Epic is the reaction, not necessarily the stupidity of the action.

The irony is that the original intent of the poster was to slam the makers of the magic goo that fubar'd his engine. The universe has a sense of humor.

Yeah - about the motor, GET IT CLEANED, and check the piston squirters.

Definately check the cam journal clearance - if they are bad the head is junk! So don't spend money on awesome biggie valves only to find out the cam is loose in it's hole.

Also, you'll notice Mazda, toyota, etc, they sell head gaskets, oil, and filters, but not "stop leak". As a general rule, if you pour it in the motor and it doesn't come from the factory, it's a bad idea even if it works.

Yeah, I'm less concerned about the damage due to oil starvation than about what happened before the pickup became fully clogged and that crap was circulating through the engine. The filter would have stopped the very first barrage, but it would have plugged up before the pickup did and then bypassed, letting all that particulate crap into the oil passages, the bearings, the head, etc. If the cam journals or the lifter bores are scored, it's time for a new head.

ok i'll admit i had no idea this liquid went into the coolant until Joe pointed it out and yes my idea was to raise awareness thinking this was a junk product so you guys have to go ahead to keep making your jokes as long as its car related i suppose.

I checked the oil filter and it was spotless clean, maybe one little chunk floating around but the way this material works it expands and gets a little hard (yah like a ***** kids) so all of this got stuck in the oil pick up tube.

Now i have a big excuse to do the whole engine, i talked to a shop today who quoted me under 1k for a bunch of work, basically they will do the head work which includes port and polish for bigger valves, new springs and lifters, boring and honeing the block, balancing it with the pistons, and hand me the short block. There's other few details we talked about but we will come up with a list of things and a more acurate price... can't wait to see the results...

oh and "bon ami" translates to good friend.

I've been in the situation where my head was junk, but not worth replacing since there's so much money in it.

Where are you getting your parts? 1k is a bit on the cheapside, I would want to check the work over pretty well after - make sure it's all been cleaned out, etc. Some things can be fixed, but a bad head is bad, filling it with $1000 in parts only wastes $1000 in parts.

BTW: Wes, caught the sig, get an exhaust, it's awesome - pick up 1k in spool and a lot of top end! Got pics if you want them, it was only a couple hundred with parts and paying a friend to do the welds
