What is the best quality 22lr handgun ammo for range shooting? For as often as I will shoot I would rather buy clean reliable rounds.

So is the Walther P22 |
Nice.
I already have the pistol, just haven't purchased any ammo yet. Want something not-junk. Thanks for the recommendations, I will look at the CCI. I like the clear plastic boxes it comes in. Side note...if a case of those 22lr bullets stay in the back of a sock drawer (cool, dry, dark), how many years should it be good for? |
I prefer CCI Mini-Mags. High quality, reasonable price. Plus it'll function reliably in nearly anything since it's slightly more powerful, but without the slightly longer case of the CCI Stinger (which some guns don't like).

As long as its dry and cool, it should last about 5-6 years before it starts losing potency. |
Really? I've had .22 ammo (CCI minimags) in the basement for a decade at least. Never had a missfire or any other problems.
I bought a truckload of the stuff way back when. Musta been at least 10,000 rounds. All I remember was it was dirt cheap, so I bought a bunch. |
Reason I ask, I remember the back of my dad's bureau being lined with 22lr cases. Pretty stuff in clear boxes. That stuff is probably 40 years old by now.
|
CCI Mini-Mags is my .22lr ammo of choice. I have never had any trouble with it in my Walter P22, while other cheap ammo has sucked.
I know a few years back my Dad and I went out shooting his Ruger MKII and we pulled out some .22lr ammo that had not been touched since the late 80's and we had absolutely no trouble with it. |
Conversely, I'd recommend avoiding the Federal 550rd value-pack that Wal-Mart sells. It's terrible. High rate of duds. Really, really frustrating to shoot.

CCI minimags are kinda "the standard" that you usually hear people reference other ammo to... such and such is faster than a mini-mag, or such and such is more or less this or that "than a mini-mag".
The biggest problem with .22lr ammo is that it's so cheap that you're tempted to buy whatever is on sale and shoot it... but if it's 50 or 100fps faster than your last ammo, you have to zero your scope again. My advice is to find ONE type of solid-nose and ONE type of hollow-point that have the same FPS speed and shoot those exclusively... as in, buy 5k rounds of each and be done with it for a few years. It helps if they're also accurate in your gun. All the bulk-pack stuff I've tried has shot great in my Savage. I think I have to give the nod to Federal Champion 36gr HP's... but we're talking about miniscule differences in groupings. I've got a box of |

I've got a box of I have no problems cycling the following in my GSG-522 and Ruger 10/22 -CCI mini-mag, veloceraptor -Winchester Bulk 36 grain C-HP -Winchester M-22 "AR-22 40 grain ammunition" -Federal M-HP 36 grain I have had no issue with Federal, however I wouldnt store that stuff. Avoid Remington Gold in semi-auto, that stuff is AWFUL. |
I need a 22. I also need MS3, springs, tires, and another set of wheels.

I am selling a S&W 422 6" in excellent condition if anyone's interested. They are nice shooters, and make fantastic suppressors hosts. The end of the barrel is already thread so all you need is a $25 adapter to thread a suppressor on, and the barrel is set very low relative to the sights, so even a large can doesn't obscure your sight picture.

YAY. Finally got confirmation that my AR lower from Core15 is shipping. Now...what to do with it?
