Zombie Apocalypse Firearm
I was going to write this in the Gun Tread, but I didn't want to thread jack. So any way if the Zombie Apocalypse was 3 days from happening what kind of firearm (based on ammo) like .40 or .223. But of coarse you have to carry all supplies like food, firearm, ammo and etc. Most engagements would be from 5 to 120 yards. Why did you choose that? I will post up what I chose later, remember best bang for your buck

Since you have over 100 posts I will play along.
Ruger 10/22 with a large scope. You can carry 1000s of rounds of ammo in a back pack and just sit in a tree stand somewhere (zombies cannot climb ladders). I think they have fragile skulls so penetration isn't much of an issue.

I do, however, disagree with "zombies cannot climb ladders"
Why can't they? What's to stop a zombie from climbing a ladder? For that matter, what's to stop a zombie from driving a car, or flying an airplane?
"zombies cannot climb ladders" is considering a very narrow definition of a "zombie" - how many zombie crisis have you survived?
I would expect a "zombie" infestation would be defined as a highly contagious neural disease which substantially increases the hosts desire to kill other living beings to a point where all rational thought and motor skills are devoted to the next kill. Effectively killing things would be like shooting heroine to a junkie, and I'll do whatever the hell it takes to get your *** out of that tree - to include picking up your buddies AR (that I snagged after I killed him) and picking you off at 150m while you're defending yourself from my buddies trying to climb your ladder.
All of the other "characteristics" of a zombie invasion will be unknown until it actually occurs.

While I only subscribe to the "Zombie Apocalypse" trend with very sarcastic undertones or from the emergency management/preparation standpoint, you point out a very interesting proposition of something I believe could theoretically happen. This would make something similar to The Walking Dead both plausible and implausible at the same time, especially if you consider the bombshell most of us (well, most I talk to about the show) suspected for a great part of the series thus far.
The burning question is, all things considered would a single gunshot to the head really put down a "Zombie" that is capable of some sort of decision making thought process?

Still, I suspect that two shots to the face would probably do sufficient damage to the nervous system to cause near-instant death - or only one shot with a large caliber soft or hollow point bullet.

Muzzle energy for your average 115gr 9mm round fired from a 16" barrel is 500-600ftlbs, or about what you get from a .357magnum in a 3"-4" revolver. This kind of energy causes heads to damn near explode, or at a minimum, there is little left of the opposite side of the skull from point of entry and all of the brains have left what is left of the skull.
The answer to you zombie woes is a KelTec Sub2000 with a tac-vest full of 33rd 9mm Glock mags and a $100 red-dot.

Accuracy as it pertains to killing things is overrated. Whether a particular gun with a particular round will shoot 1"@500yds or 2"@500yds IS a matter of accuracy. But to kill a person, 1" groups is not required... let's say fist sized groups is good enough.
Even the shittiest "rifle" should be able to get you head sized groups out to 200-300 yds on iron sights, and fist-sized groups with any sort of optic no matter how bad a shooter you are. After considering that you just need to be "accurate enough", your though process should be about power, how easy the gun is to operate (not only for you, but for other non-gun-inclined people), reliability, and availability of ammo.
AR's would be great for killing zombies. They are reliable, accurate, plentiful, easy'ish to work on, etc... but the fact that your KelTec Sub2000 will share magazines with your Glock 17/19, means you have a short/medium range killing package that even an idiot can operate.
However... an AR+1911 combo vs. Sub2k+G17 debate could go both ways all day. How about AK+DesertEagle or Mini14+.44mag or dual-wield PMR30's.
HELLZAYEAHHHHHH DUAL WEILD PMR30's = ULTIMATE ZOMBIE ARSENAL!!! You can put 1000rds in a freaking fanny-pack.

The .22lr is what I would choose because light weight ammo, quiet and is still deadly. It is so easy to carry a 1000 rounds in your pockets. If the zombies can hear to find there next target than a home made suppressor is easy to build out of about anything if need be. I have had a .22lr go through a cow skull at 200-250 yards.
