Engine Bay Shoot - Critique!

i just went with what was visually appealing to me. since i love all aspects of the engine bay, anything worked for me
could you care to name which ones you actually liked?
it'll be interesting to understand your point. nothing wrong with learning one or two things from this experience.

This is the only one of the engine bay shots that grabs my attention a little.
I'm by no means a great photographer or critiquer, but a few things I'd consider would be:
* find your subject and make the photo about THAT.
* get rid of all the other distracting elements.
* get rid of even the less distracting elements.
* remember that if it doesn't add to the picture, it's maybe taking away from it.
* you sure as **** better get the whole subject in the photo. (steering wheel)
My gut feel from most of the pictures above is that there is a lot going on. Engine bays are full of a lot of stuff and when you take random shots of them, it's hard for me to know which stuff you are telling a story about. A throttle body? a blue coupler? an un-capped PCV?
And when you show something in context, you might consider showing the whole context. If your subject is the throttle body, where does the big blue hose go? it just sort of wanders out of the frame.

well, you are right about most of those points.
you also have to understand that photography is an art and as such it doens't have to follow all rules. some can be bent, others broken.
i took it attempting to show a perspective of what you would see if you were standing behind the camera. albeit, it didn't come completely as i expected it, but it was a good first attempt.
i agree, it is very difficult to show case the overall feel of an engine bay being so busy and all and i could had def made a better attempt at picking on subject and making it shine. i guess i can keep trying and next time i would keep your points in mind.
getting critique from regular folks is the best because you aren't trying to decipher if i followed rules of thrids, proper lighting, contrast, saturation, temperature....you are critiquing exactly what you see.

agreement: I agree the VC shot is the only one holding interest.
hate: Please don't blame artist license and monitor calibration on bad photography, especially when you asked for the critique. One needs to actually understand the principles of art before he should start breaking them under the guise of "art". There's a reason that a real artist will spend years just studying them. Seriously, if you don't actually want critique of your pictures, don't ask for it. You won't learn how to take better pictures if you just make excuses about why there's not good.
two words: specular highlights.
two cents: Your light source was too small and too bare.
off topic: How come you put the start button where the acc port was, but then moved the acc port to the panel you made--wouldn't it have been easier [and better] to put the starter button on the panel in a position that's a lot easier to reach every time you want to start the car?
hardware: Does your lens really only have 5 straight aperture blades? Is that the 35mm f/2?
