Buddy of mine bought a Chevy sonic (full blown homo, just needs monster energy decal). If I remember correctly, it sports a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder with a tiny turbo.
It's also a 1/4 mile dominator as seen here:

1/4 mile dominator? I think they are like 16 seconds 0-60 1/4 mile.

It's not about the size, it's what you do with it, right?

I wonder how hard one of those would be to convert for rwd and fit to a miata transmission. ~200hp and 40ish MPG in a miata sounds like a fun street car. More just for the novelty of having a 3-cylinder car.

When cruising, you want minimum restriction for best economy. So the tiny turbo produced unneeded boost at lower throttle openings and unneeded restriction at cruising speeds.

Not a problem if wastegate is wide open at cruise.

Is the huge outlet horn because catalytic converter?

probably, still a good design, I like how everyone is reintroducing bypassed wastegate exhausts...much like the EFR turbos.

was just about to mention the same thing.

that's pretty awesome. the technology is catching on and is here to stay. that means (hopefully) efr's will be dropping down in price because it won't be the cool new tech on the block. I'm hoping that happens sooner rather than later:giggle:

but also those turbos are pretty transparent. I drove a Sonata 2.0t the other day and I could barely tell it was turbocharged, peak tq is like 2000rpm.

I felt the same way about the MSM turbo prior to the AEM CAI mod, it didn't even feel like it was boosting - but then that was the designers aim apparently, it was meant to feel like a small 6 cylinder, smooth throughout the power range.

If I've got a turbo, I wanna feel the boost DAMN-IT!

Not sure I agree with that. The way the ecu is programmed on the msm is exactly the opposite of the v6 feel. More like honda vtec feel actually. Its terrible. Probably to conserve the stock (weak) rods and clutch.

Then it would like like a huge turbo.

Mazduh 06-21-2013 01:43 AM

I suddenly don't feel so bad about my msm turbo...

Oh gawd imagine what the size of the turbo they will put on the new miata... :(

More like people are retarded. Why would anyone need instructions on how to use reverse gear?

nitrodann 06-21-2013 06:41 AM

Fiat knew they were marketing a car to people who are not actually enthusiasts but knew still many would get a manual i spose, kind of like the new mini, lots of 'new enthusiasts' who just learned to drive manual.

ha
if you feel inferior just go check out any euro 1.8t
suddenly your peepee will grow:party:

But seriously I think these little turbos are pretty good. as long as they're not choked up by stupid electronics or exhaust parts too much you get a bunch of torque, and decent gas mileage. in a daily driver that's pretty sweet.

if the next miata will have like 220-250hp and similar torque and not weigh more than 2500lb I think it will be a hoot
