Default Did it right once, Now I want to be BAD

Hi,

My name is Miguel. I have lurked around here long enough to learn the basics and get my Miata turbocharged. So I guess, let's start there. About 5 years ago I was introduced to the world of Miatas by sheer coincidence. I was replacing a mazda 3 I bought with a check engine light. I never found out what the problem was with it and I sold it before I could find out. I did love it though, it was my first stick shift car. I learned on it and learned to love it. I needed to get me another one so I began my search for something fun, reliable, and cheap to maintain. I was mostly interested in Honda Civics because of how plentiful they were, and my brother used to have a 1992 hatchback back in the day. I ended up finding a mazda miata for 4k with 65k miles. Manual convertible. I did not know a thing about miatas, the miles were what attracted me the most. The small amount of research that I did, I came to find out that it was probably the most smiles per dollar. Bought it from the original owner.

Kept it pretty stock for a while, then went down the usual route, maintenence, wheels, tires, coilovers, and then added power.

Meister R 10k/7k coilovers
15x8 Advanti Storm S1, wrapped in Yokohama S Drives
Flyin Miata Butterfly Brace
Full Mkturbo Kit
Supermiata Coolant Reroute
Ebay Special Radiator
Toyota COP Kit

She is a blast to drive to say the least. I love the mkturbo kit. So far I have put maybe 20k miles on it. I learned a lot in my turbo adventure. The Mkturbo kit was perfect for me, price was great and was a complete bolt on kit. Left very little for me to be able to mess up. I think this whole process has taught me the basics of turbo charging a miata. I tried to follow what more experienced people on here were recommending.

This leads me to my next build,

This is my 1995 Miata. I was not in the market for another miata in particular. I just found this one by chance and could not pass on the great deal it was. Previous Owner was a young kid working at a Ferrari dealership. He had used it for track days in stock form and by some chance he blew up the stock engine. He sourced a bp4w engine and had it installed. He deleted the Power Steering and AC, and converted the rack to a manual rack. He was selling it because he had gave up on the engine swap. When I got the car it was not running, valve cover was off and the intake was in the passenger seat. It already had a reroute in it probably a DIY version, and it had a 4.1 torsen from factory. He was asking $1k and I offered $500 and I would tow it out. He accepted and I had no choice but to pick it up.

Brought it back home, figured out the reason he could not get it running was that he did not know how to convert the bp4w to a return fuel system. Finished that up, changed the timing belt, and it was up and running. I have used it as my daily for about 2 years now, and have slowly gathered parts for a build. My goal with this one, to turbo it as cheaply and as reliably as possible.

I found a local guy selling this compilation of parts for $1k. Talked him down to $600. I figured that I would at least get it a new MS2 and if the rest of the parts were trash I would just toss them. Turbo needs a rebuild for sure. Manifold is an ebay special. Intercooler is questionable? And downpipe is a BEGI bottom mount.

Got a great deal on some flowforce injectors, and now I have a starting point with the build. I figured I would install the Megasquirt and injectors. Learn how to actually tune while the engine is stock, and I can worry about making sense of the turbo parts later. Hopefully I can use the Ebay manifold to some degree of reliability, and pay someone to make a downpipe for me using the BEGI downpipe for parts. Then, buy some ebay intercooler piping, and hopefully be on my merry way boosting.

This is going to be mostly an exercise on tuning. I plan on learning how to tune on this car so I can know more about what is going on with my other miata. And hopefully when I have that down I can also turbo this one. If I blow anything up I will not blame anyone but myself.

Research a lot, maybe copy some timing tables from people with similar mods, and do the AFR yourself. First car I tuned was a turbo rotary, and it was all from doing a ton of research and not taking big steps in the tune.
