CarPC + Megasquirt
And I often have to drive to new places and get myself lost on the way there or back. Nav is invaluable. Expect the market to be saturated with cheap but very good portable units for $150 this Christmas.
no i have ben but i dunno maybe my goals r different. My miata in no way is going to be comfortable, quiet,or streetable. (which is why AC is removed, power steering removed, no radio, no carpet inside) Its going to spend about 5% of its life on the street so it wouldnt be worth it for me. Nonetheless Id still like to see what this stuff likes look. I might just make a mount for my 450 dollar new laptop and throw that in there for tuning.

loki, i have some used parts i dont need any more:
7" screen - $150 shipped
power inverter - $20 shipped
and i can get you custom-built laptop for decent price.
the only problem with power inverters is that they add noise to electrical system which results in crappy sound quality.

laptop from us. we custom build laptops as well as desktops. screen is 7" touch screen i used in my miata. i am going for a little bit different setup and this screen will not work for me. works great at 800x600 (optimal for car) and 1024x768. comes with remote and headrest shroud. minor scratches on screen. i bet they can be removed with alcohol or something but i wouldnt bet on it. scratches are not visible when monitor is on and do not affect touch screen or visibility itself.
its black and has following inputs: 2x rca, 1 vga, 1 usb. works from any 12v source.

does that count as "real example"?
what options does that include? but at that price im back to a macmini formatted for windows or XP. THe only advantage to laptop is the standby. Which i dont think will be that beneficial.
FWIW, the Apple TV for $299 can be modded to work like any other computer and it's smaller/cheaper.
Not that it compares much to what we're talking about, but with Loki talking Mac Mini i thought i'd throw it out there.

Cool stuff. I don't have any experience with the apple tv, just saw the mod online on macrumors.com cool site BTW.
The mac mini would be sick. Any car pc with 802.11 wireless so I can pull outside my house/apartment so I can get online with it quick to download updates is kickass.

well, i have carputers in both my cars (96 miata and 05 rsx type-s) and im installing another one in my partner's audi a4 right now. and then i have another complete carpc laying around waiting to be installed in our 06 supercharged x-runner show car. and well... a whole bunch of parts to make about 10 car computers

thats not bad I need it to run windows though :( or linux
Even though it supposedly works, i'm sure it wouldn't be that fast nor ideal for what we would want it to do. It might have an intel processor and the ability to run windows though. An extra fan to cool it down might be the ticket.
