Default OMG! W00t! More I/O

Has anyone seen this? goodness me, it's da bomb.

'Course, I have no idea how to USE it for anything. But shoot, I should have gotten this instead of a new ecu. Who cares about one output when I could get a butt-ton more?

Hmmmmm....

Anyway, wanted to know if anyone has seen/used this.

unless it gives me the ability to program a 0-5V output... it does me no good.

Ooops, sorry, left that off. Looks like its more a MS-I thing, though. What sucks: There's versions of the MS-II's chip with like 20 more i/o's. Ah, well.

The MS-II works fine, really. Just that I cooked a coil. But I'd been driving around for a week or two on it beforehand.

Now I just need to get away from work long enough to make it to a junk yard, get me some COP action.

What the hell you gonna do with 20 more I/Os though?

With the MS1 you can do pretty much everything you need for the miata.. I think anyway..

I think its pretty cool that you're messing with the MS-II though.

Heh, are you kidding? First off, there's BARELY enough to run the car - having the computer run the altenator is totally extra. Having it run stuff like the carbon canister purge is totally out of the question.

Logging EGT's would be nice.

Of course, having it run a system of generic guages or valves, water injection as a practical application, unnecisary stuff like a "low temp" light or other warning light, then totally silly stuff, like a boost-proportional lighting globe - those things have intensity, number of sparks, and spread controls. I'd love to use one as a two- or three-axis guage. Sure, I could live without it - but here I have ALL this processing power to spare, wouldn't it be nice to just be able to do whatever I want?

Oh, or maybe sequential injection, individual COP spark (more dwell time!), maybe dumb stuff like a turbo timer function or some sort of security feature - kill the ignition after 500 meters.

And don't forget the woman pleaser harely seats: A vibrator in the passenger seat that pulses proportionaly to engine RPM (or whatever I pic, I guess).

+1.

Develop and test, so I can sell my MS1 and run MS2.

There are too few MS1 i/o's all kidding aside. Try running 4 COP's sequential injection, idle control, ebc, launch, fan's, etc. It adds up fast.

Not sure what I will and will not be able to run yet, my MS has been out of the car since september, and only got the fans and idle control, none of the goodies up and running.

Exactly that. Launch control and flat shift? Sure, I can live without it. But it would be NICE to be able to turn it on.

The carbon canister I would actually do if I had the IO for it. My car pollutes enough, if I can do something without hurting performance to pullute less, I'm all for it. Ok, I'll take out all the self monitoring, but at least to run one solenoid, I'd be happy.

Maybe a shift light, or a general warning light might be nice.

DEFINATELY an EGT logging would make me happy.

A couple general i/o for logging purposes would be awesome. Fuel pressure? Ok, not all the time. But I would like to log it when I'm worried about it - the number of times I've ridden shotgun for a friend with a fuel guage running in through the window is... more than zero, which is what it should be.

Ok, here's my usage right now, and I'm FULL.

Optional:
Tach
Fans
VICS
EBC
O2
Knock

"necisary":
AIT
Baro
Crank Trigger
Cam Trigger
TPS
MAP
IgnA
IgnB
FuelA
FuelB
FP

So, if I want to do water injection, stagged injection, ind COP, sequential injection, flat shift, any saftey/anti-theft lockout, gear based boost target, A/C control, EGT logging, well, which of the above should I give up? Maybe I could live without the crank sensor. I could probably lose the Baro correction and the EBC, but why make the sacrifice? I want it all, but I'm not asking for anything unreasonable here. I'd love to know what the CPU load is.

You forgot some... Electric actuator control output to raise up the top when you shut the car down, then roll up the windows, a couple electro-magnetic locks to latch the top...

Hey, I admire that you're adventuring out on this. I know that I don't have the patients and possibly the skill to do so myself.

Oooo - the locks sound cool. In general, I like to save weight where I can. That's why the OEM ECU is coming out. :-P Doesn't say much for the carbon canister but I think that actually weighs very little once you pare it down to one solenoid and the canister. Water for water injection weighs a lot. That's why joe's car is so back-heavy. I think he runs the same springs front and back...

Those electromagnetic locks are really strong too.. They're used in security doors at my work, a solid oak door and a 280 pound guy can charge them and not budge. I think they can be rated at like 750kg holding power each, but they're pretty good sized too.

I have little concern for weight savings honestly.

On a related note I fail to understand how the purge valve on the can works? I've messed with only like maybe 2 carbed vehicles in the past all had a vacuum line from the carb to the charcoal can, and that was just a vent to/from the fuel tank.. Every EFI vehicle I've ever owned up to my Miata I've never seen a purge system. Also anyone care to explain why a vacuum valve is necessary on the 1.8 94-97 FPR?

Notes from the designer:
Quote:
Abe,

1) the added chip needs to be a MS1 processor.
2) I don't have any special s/w for the 2nd processor, but you can use MS1 or
MS1 extra code.
3) it has 6 logic inputs - you assign them as needed.
4) to drive loads under 50ma just connect directly to the output connector. If
you need to drive a bigger load then you need to add an external power transistor.
5) it adds 2 additional analog inputs that are unbuffered - you need to add any
conditioning/voltage shift circuits before connecting to these inputs or else
you can blow up the A/D inputs.
6) logging for the second process is done via its own RS232 interface and the
usual MT connection.

If you want a board please contact Glens Garage as he bought out my entire stock
last year.

Thanks

Marc
As I understand it, the system is really complicated, with solenoids connecting the can to the tank, can to the intake manifold, the tank to a MAP-like sensor, and they all turn on and off in a bunch of different patterns to run various self tests, etc.

Testing aside, all it does is this: Car running, open valve, draw out collected fumes from charcoal canister & tank. Close valve. Stop car. Tank and canister left in vacuum, any fumes from tank get absorbed by canister. Start car, repeat.

My code would look like this:
when:
Map < 40 Kpa AND RPM > 2000
(or maybe RPM = 3000 (hysterises 1000), MAP <70 kpa)
Open solenoid

That would be that. Solenoid connects manifold to can, can connects to gas tank. Not complicated. Just go through and pull out a couple sensors and valves.

In an ideal work, I reuse the MAP to be my barrometric sensor, saving eveyrone who comes after me $25, and getting a better, "under hood" signal.

My guess is someone said "well, gas could go into the can, and some insanely small amount could leak from the can into the manifold, out of the closed throttle plates, down the entire intake track, past the air filter, out from under the hood and escape into the atmosphere.

Like you know, one part in a million of what you lose every time you fill the tank. *** monkies.

In other news, another awesome board, from the maker of the jimstim, this is something I wish I had: http://www.jbperf.com/signal_interceptor/index.html
