BOOM. 2 minute search.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/mo...7561&mode=info

Edit: i just realized. you gotta be a member of the ADC. not sure if that version is actaully panther compatible either. if you have tiger install, that version should work fine.

well, like i said, if all else fails, ill look for my copy of xcode for panther and ill burn you a copy.

You can upgrade your G4 to an Intel mac. For the price of a new Intel Mac. No other way.

Yes, if you put the installer on a flash drive, booted your wifey's mac into windows, and plugged in the drive, you'd be able to grab the installer.
i dont think this will work. you NEED Xcode because it installs important libraries needed to run X11

anyway, the version you need to get is version 1.5. this is the only one compatible with all versions 10.3-10.3.9. Im not sure but ive read that only Xcode 2-2.41 is usable on 10.3.9-10.4. Dont quote me.

and they say macs are made for the computer illiterate. if this was a windows machine it would have been up and running in 30 min with one unattended install cd.

But even with upgrades, a brand new laptop would be more...

Just called a place...answered one of my questions...
Cant upgrade the processor...CAN upgrade the HD & memory, to the point where it will handle Tiger, Bootcamp & Windows...THEY said it'll run prety good, not as fast as the Macbook, but should be good enough IF I upgrade the HD & mem....They are gonna call me back with a price, which I'm sure will be absurd, and therefore will bring me back to reality...

I have to see what I can afford (not too much), vs what I can do...
I wish I could literally gut out the powerbook and stuff it in the G4 while my wife was sleeping and never mention it again...
I'm sure this will get a big laugh form everyon, but anyone know anywhere to get a cheapass Intel Powerbook?? Refurbished/scratched/etc...dont care..
Then I can offload my G4 (have a friend that wants it), and by with the funds plus a lil more...
This is getting ridiculous...

So I guess the oNLY way I can use THIS G4, is if there's a way to download appleX11....otherwise I cant use it for tuning period, cuz I need it to install Megatunix...If we can get a definiitve YES/NO, then I know where I stand with this...Upgrade (def gonna be wayyy to much), or use a PC....
Your machine is fine for running Megatunix, don't bother upgrading it. And they're idiots, you will NEVER be able to run Bootcamp on a G4.

I put up the link to X11. Go grab it, install XCode, then do the rest.

For those complaining about the difficulty - yes, this could be done in 2 seconds with Windows. But if MegaTune were written for OS X, it would also run in 2 seconds. On a good Unix system, Megatunix would install in about the same time. This is cramming a Ford V8 into a Miata. Not straightforward.

boy do i know. its easy for the people who just want to use the computer for typical stuff. when you need to start using terminal and xcode stuff, thats going into uncharted territory.

mac users are left only with this option because coders do not care to encode these types of programs for a mac. hell, megatunix was made originally for UNIX, not Mac OSX, it just happens that macs can RUN UNIX programs with the use of Xcode and X11

I'm not the only one who's tried to make this point, and I don't know how to do it without being a dick, so here goes, and apologies for being a dick.

I don't care what the guy on the phone says. If you have a G4, you can't run Bootcamp. The only way to run Windows XP on a G4 is through an EMULATOR, like VirtualPC. Virtualization, like VMware or Parallels, won't do it. Even if you could install it, Bootcamp wouldn't do it.

Your issue isn't hardware. Your issue is software. Once you get X11 and Xcode running, you'll be able to follow the directions to install Megatunix. I don't know what those are, you're on your own there.

Running Unix programs on a Mac is not for everyone, you're going to have to do your homework and follow directions. I'm sure you can do it, it'll just take some concerted effort and a willingness to stick with it, rather than searching for easy ways out.

Get X11 and Xcode installed, read the directions for the next steps in installing Megatunix, and start learning what you'll have to do so you can ask questions.

i call bullshit. did you tell him this is a laptop? i never heard of an apple laptop's processor being upgradable unless you change then entire logic board. is this an actual apple representative?

seriously, you could end up getting scammed. use some common sense too. Ive never seen any laptop's processors have the ability to upgrade to a different processor.

Ok, just got to read all the latest posts...

1st about solutions with this Mac...
-The link looks like its for Xcode1.5...I needed somethign called "apple x11"...
On the MT instructions, it says X11 should be on the OSX install discs..which I dont have.
-Xcode 2.5 is the new version, which i was able to download, but not install...I'm guessing because I dont have X11..but not sure, plus the instructions say X11, then Xcode 2.4, then darwinports, then megatunix...
So I'm thinking you need to go in order??

As for the upgrade... I know SOFTware is the issue with installing MegaTUNIX. I was just wondering if by upgrading the Hardware, I could upgrade to better software, and thus be able to handle things like bootcamp, windows, etc..
It was NOT Apple that I spoke with today...its aplace called www.macpalace.com They did NOT say i could upgrade the processor...he said the HD & the memory. And that with that I COULD run bootcamp/windows..Thats what the GUY told me, and the people at the Apple store said I could upgrade as well...
However you've made it clear that it wont handle bootcamp/windows, and believe me I knwo better than to just believe what the guy tells me...
So I will do some research about it, but at this point I'm convinced that it cant handle it, or at the very least it cant handle it well enough...(not debating..just saying either way wont work for me so moot point)...

For now I'm gonna try to get the software on my G4 to the point where I can run Megatunix on THIS. In the meantime I'm gonna try and see what the cheapest Intel powered MACbook will cost me, and see if its affordable for me. IF I could find one for like $600 (even a lil more), then I could sell the G4 and afford the difference....To me that sounds way to cheap (new ones are like $1200), but who knows maybe I can find one thats cosmetically banged up, or refurbished or something.... If anyone knows of a good place to start looking, (besides fleabay...i'll look there, just haven't YET)...let me know!
IF I can afford/find one, that'll be the best of both worlds...Otherwise I'll keep hacking at it with the G4, or get a cheap PC laptop...eghh

Hope this clears things up a little, and I dont take anyone's advice/comments/etc as "being a dick". I appreciate you guys even going thru the trouble of trying to help! So that said, find me a damn cheap Macbook "ya ***** bastard"

The link I provided is some sort of X11.dmg, and it says it provides X11. Is that the link that looks like Xcode 1.5 to you? I haven't actually downloaded it to check.

once again here is X11

Well ok...

1) He never really used a Mac and is having issues
2) He works with PC all the time
3) He trying to run windows any
4) He unable to install windows with out and emulator and is having a hard time either understand how or getting it to work
5) He trying to run megatune which is a PC verison instead of a megatunix
6) He have an easier time just selling the mac for a PC.

What I am trying to say unless he wants to keep it just to have the mac then ok, but it sounds like he may not be able to get his mac to emulate windows. More power to him, but based on what he saids, sound like he have an easier time working with the PC instead.

My opinon and advice for the guy is to just switch to a PC for this.

I wish him the best luck

So far it seems that jsut about everything has been covered that you need to do except ONE important thing. A Serial to USB adapter. I was planning on running megatunix and doing all my stuff with that on a G4 Ibook I had. The problem was that I could not find an adapter that would work properly. I would suggest starting to look for one now.

--sorry must've someone clicked the wrong link...

Ok so with that link I will (should be able to) get the x11, then try xcode (hopefully that was the issue), then Darwinports (not an issue), then megatunix...
Wish me luck!

wildfire, I hear ya...but as its been said I really want to go the G4 route..originally wanting windows/megatune, now that its a def no-no I'm goign for megatunix on the G4...

If THIS doesnt work for some reason, then it'll have to be the PC route..otherwise I'll be unable to tune...

--Anyone have any opinions bout "cheap" Macbook pricing? lol

I guess I wont really kow till I get the software setup, then megatunix, then try the cable...which at that point I'll prob have a REAL cheap G4 for sale since I will have thrown it out a window!

you send your computer, you send the money. Go right ahead. i wont trust it. that place doesnt look legit to me.

im not gonna believe that website, esp if they tell you CAN run boot camp when its not even possible for **** on a PPC based comptuer without "updating" the processor to intel based.

you CAN update some of the hardware. but the missing link is the processor itself. hard drive and memory are updatable. you cant update the processor unless those guys have some logic board with a intel processor on it lying around.

If it says it has drivers for OSX you might be lucky. It depends on what drivers they decided to give you. I know mine did not have OSX drivers. If yours work it should not be a big issue.

I hear ya bout the possible chopshop...And I don tknow much bout these things, but logic does tell me that if its the INTEL vs PPC procesor thats causing all these issues we've been speaking about, then it only makes sense that IT would need to be upgraded...Whether or not its possible, I dunno. Well at least now I do thanx to you, but I didnt know...Just saying I was on the same page..in theory lol

The cable is from Tiger Direct (one of those diy comp stores). It has 1 disc, and says includes drivers for Osx & Windows....I guess we'll see soon enough...If not I have a serial to usb adapter I could put on the MS, and just grab a USB-USB cable...

Gonna try the downloads now...wish me luck...
I'll be online via the wife's mac, and downloading on mine...

Yes, im an idiot...sorry but its late and still new to all this...
AFTER doing everything described below, and making this post...i re-read the thread remembering there were 2 links....dloading xcode 2.4 (hopefully w/ success) now....

Just to be honest and give u guys some laughs, im not deleting the original post....(read below)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Took 2 hrs of simultneous downloading on the 2 macs, decided to dload both xcode 2.5 & xcode 3.0 since i didnt know which was which....

xcode2.5
When I go to intall the complete pkg, I get "error code (999), cant be installed)...
It allows me to go into the various pkgs and install 1 by 1, but not EVERY pkg...didnt think that would work...
Looking at the pdf readme, it says:
10.5 leopard & 10.4 Tiger..will not run on earlier osx..

The 3.0, my "installer" just wont even open the complete pkg to see what would happen...
When i go into the individual pkg's, installer opens with an error msg..."build materials could not be found"...

So now what??

i told you to download and install Xcode 1.5, NOT 2.0 and up. dont they have a link there for 1.5?

EDIT: ok i just checked, its not there. looks like you gotta find another source. i looked around on my usual BT sites, none to be found. youre pretty much stuck without that Xcode 1.5. ill look around for my CD

did you check if you didnt have Xcode already installed? does X11 open when you try to open it?
