Well if you're not going up to see family anymore, do consider shipping it. It will fit in a 48x15x15 box w/o the shifter installed. You want to be sure to pack it up tightly so that it does not move. Small cardboard boxes around the turret works well. I ship miata manual transmissions all the time. A 6 speed to DC area would cost me on the order of 35 minutes + $60 for freight + $5 or so in supplies.
UPS, DHL, Fedex, other?

I think we get those boxes from U-Line, but there's plenty of places that sell cardboard boxes. We have a UPS account so we go that way, but I'd imagine that DHL would be the least costly if one had no account.
It's really not that bad to ship. Just use plenty of cardboard to keep the trans from being able to shift around. The other option is to stretch wrap the trans and use the spray foam stuff to form around it, but I'd imagine that's an expensive rig for a single shot use. Don't use bubble wrap or peanuts.
