Last night I got 2 more down pipes tacked together. I am working on a few different designs for the down pipes so there will be a bit of variation between what goes out to customers. All will start and stop at the same points, just the flex pipe and transition from 2.5" to 3" will vary.

 

So since I was one of the first to pay does that mean I get to pick of the two different types?

 

No. I have not decided how I am splitting up who gets what downpipes. With the 3" flex pipe it is a bit difficult to get the down pipe in and out. With a 2.5" flex pipe it gets rid of that difficulty. I have ordered 2.5" to 3" transition pipes from 2 different companies and seeing which one works better and makes more sense. Right now I am siding with the ones I had originally ordered. Will get some pictures tonight of the differences.

This is the newer transition I got. This is the bottom end of the downpipe and the I don't like how the transition fits over the 3" pipe. I bought 10 of those transitions, so they will be used, but I probably will not be getting more of that type.

Those expanders suuuuuuuuck. it can't expand exhaust tubing.

Honestly a die and a press so I can make them myself is the correct way to do it. I can buy a press from HF for reasonably cheaply, I just don't know where to get the die I need from.

 

you could make your own cones!
or just have a muffler shop make some adapters. They usually have all the dope exhaust tools for making stuff like this.

 

Well I could still use the original design Lars if you have any extra. My can has no AC and no PS so I think I could manage to get the downpipe in either from the top or the bottom.

Down pipe fits with the 3" flex pipes. It is simply the putting it in part that has rubbing issues. Down pipe goes in first from the top, the 3" flex pipe rubs between the trans and steering column while going in, and you kind of have to push it past. Doing it once or twice is not bad, but having removed my original one several times now some of the strands on the flex pipe are starting to break and such. I just want to make the cleanest and easiest install possible for you guys.

 

Does it still rub if you jack up the driver side a bit with the mount bolt loosened?

 

I have not tried that since I am lazy, but I am willing that would make it not rub at all. Once the down pipe is in there is no rubbing or fitment issues. This is simply a change to make installation easier. In the future once the crappy transitions are all used, I will be going with the more expensive ones I had bought before with the 2.5" flex pipes most likely.

 

Props for going through all of this...and posting your progression in design as well as why you've come to your conclusions.

I use the eccentric reducers that were posted earlier... though they arent cheap...and i doubt they come in aluminized steel.

 

I have no preference on which one.
