(big turbo url) Thoughts on this guy?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/T3-T4-T3T4-...E/253646032165 That is essentially a drop-in (if the photo is as-advertised) since the WG port sits directly over the turbine inlet. Both turbine and compressor are significantly larger than your current t3 and it will support 300+ hp. |
Another eBay turbo bites the dust. 1 HPDE, 2 Autocrosses and maybe 200 street miles. Let's talk name brand drop in for 300 hp.

Is it rebuildable? What does the thrust bearing look like? IIRC, it's one of the major corners cut. Sometimes sintered, sometimes steel instead of bronze...

I've been looking at a GTX 2860R, which I *think* might be a drop in.
Turbo: https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...de=GTX2860Rsub Exhaust housing: https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...y_Code=GTHGT28 But not 100% sure if that's bolt in or not. Also, there was a page that you could select all of the stuff in one go, but can't seem to find it right now. |

IMO that's big turbo for a Miata. Agree, it will be slow to spool, especially compared to what you're running now. Are you still just looking for 300whp+? If so, the easy move is to a t3/t4 hybrid. There are few in this thread that are running the eBay t3/t04b with single and dual ball bearing CHRAs. I couldn't find any of the BB versions that were direct swaps. They were either v-band, 4 bolt or 5-bolt w/o a WG port/hole. Here's the journal bearing version of those turbos:

Mine does 7.7 @ 90 in the 1/8th when it's not destroying diff housings and axles. |

Not sure, I haven't inspected very closely. I have a replacement on the shelf. I'm just tired of messing with eBay stuff. I want more reliability.
You have had more trouble with turbo's then anyone else I have talked to with my setups. You also are probably running it harder then 90% of my customers. |
I didn't realize you were tracking the car- though that doesn't seem like much service even from an eBay turbo.
ATP is your go to for Garrett turbos with a Ford 5-bolt exit flange so you can drop it in. Here's the Garrett equivalent of that eBay t3/t4 from ATP: Garrett Turbocharger, T3/T4E, 50Trim Compressor, StageIIITurbine : atpturbo.com You need spec the turbine AR, bolt pattern, etc. ATP has the Ford 5-bolt turbine housing you need with a bunch of different Garrett GT turbos- like this GT28: https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...ory_Code=GTNBB Ball bearing: https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...ode=gt-2860-T3 |

Shoot me an email. I might be able to cook you something up that works with something a bit more well named and a little bit better on track.

Could you share with me as well? Other than the one I killed earlier this year, the 2nd one has been great so far - but curious what your more track/autocross oriented solution might be. My second turbo has done probably 12 autocrosses, and 150 runs.

Why are you going journal bearing instead of BB?
|
Because some people like more friction and slower spool.

Totally missed over his third link. What could I expect out of that 2860 with .48 vs the 2860 with .63 a/r? |
This has my eye

Capable of well over 300 whp but spool will be worse than a 2871r. Lots of 2871 miata dyno sheets to get an idea from. You'll likely be giving up a crap ton of spool compared to your current setup. |
I'd get the 2871 tbh. I don't have an MKTurbo, but I've been very happy with mine. Or go GTX if you're going to want to spend more.
