Hustler - Have you checked in to the Countour HD cameras (not the new ROAM version)? Several guys in Gainesville, including the IMV Films crew, seemed to prefer those over the GoPro if I recall correctly.
Unfortunately, I have no personal experience with any of them.

I think its a good idea to try new cameras, personally I think the GoPros are a bit overhyped, although I will say I am satisfied with mine.
I was concerned about the lack of LCD and pointing the camera in the best spot, but it hasn't really been a big problem, I usually check my first session's video to make sure the camera was in a good position and then set it and forget for the rest of the weekend.

The GoPro HERO1 I got for Christmas comes with the rechargeable lithium battery that looks like a cell phone battery. I tried it on one of the middle settings with a 16gb card and I got ~3hrs of video out of the card. The battery still had juice for more. I got 4+ hours out of the card and battery on the lowest resolution. BTW, the lowest resolution has a 60 FPS rate and all higher resolutions are at 30fps. They all seem to do fine video.
It recharges with a usb cable that comes with it, so you can recharge it with a cig lighter in your car or use a wall outlet or just use a laptop or PC. It has a place where you can plug into it for video out as well.

cliff notes:
- cell phones suck as cameras because they have very narrow field of view and slow framerate
- cell phones work a-ok for datalogging
- dedicated cameras in 720p usually run at 60fps and widest setting which looks AWESOME
- gopro can be powered with via mini-usb so you don't need to worry about the battery
- hero comes with a lot of mounts (more than gopro) but doesn't have an out of the box rollbar mount
my gopro with ram rollbar mount:

I don't own one, but had decided that if I ever want one of these, the Contour GPS will be the one. It does geotagging and has onboard Bluetooth... you can use your iProduct as a remote monitor. THe GPS model is $300, but the regular HD is only $150.
Check out the specs and a comparison chart of the different Contour models. I think the shape and design of the Contour opens you to a lot more options over the GoPro. Again, don't either, this is just based on the homework I've done.
Check out the Amazon description, there is a comparison chart at the bottom of the page:

I have one of these mounted to the roll bar. I works pretty well. You need to run it plugged into the cigarette lighter cuz if you hit bumps hard enough it shakes the battery and then the file is corrupt.

Here's what the video looks like:
Here's where it's mounted:
I like having the screen and controls away from the lens so I can turn it on as I'm leaving the paddock as opposed to having to turn it on before getting strapped in and having 7-8 mins of staging taking up memory.
I also have a GoPro with the lcd back and works great too. Just not as convenient.

This Panasonic HD camcorder gives you the best results - automatically. Because the 16.8x zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. And power O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) helps prevent blurring - typically a big concern when shooting with a zoom. Intelligent Auto (iA) senses the shooting conditions and automatically makes the settings and activates functions that will deliver optimal results. The wide correction area corrects even relatively large hand-shake motion. Especially good for active video shooting.
