The block is where the mass is. If we're just talking about the clearance with the hood subject, there's at least a half dozen ways to tackle that... basically it's not really an issue when custom fabrication is your all day every day.

There's a lot of genius in this, and a little bit of crazy. Which is perfect. The dry sump setup from the factory is one feature that should not be underestimated. Factory dry sump means everything else was designed with that lower clearance in mind. The 360 engine is 18.5" tall from top of valve cover to bottom of pan. For perspective, a BP motor is about 23.5" tall. That is a huge deal for center of mass, and just not something you can accomplish without finding a motor that came that way right off the engineer's CAD software at the factory.

The dry sump part is indeed the one that is often overlooked, the engine weight is going to be placed very low.
Additionally, since the rest of the setup is also rather small I expect this swap to do wonders in terms of vehicle dynamics.
The Samsonas gearbox is TINY!
Less than 17" length and 10" diameter (minus bellhousing), weighs ~80 Lbs and rated for #allofthepower, which means long service intervals.
I'm pretty much DYING to drive with the new drivetrain and see what this feels like.

BTW, everyone seems to be way more concerned about the intake height than I am, haha!
Even if I leave everything alone exactly as it is (at least to start with), it barely sticks a couple inches above the hood line, so a Lexan bubble on top would easily solve this.
For comparison purposes, the front hoop in Creampuff's cage sticks another 1.5" above the Ferrari engine, but that has never prevented me from driving the car...

Very cool. Intake solution will be fun to watch.

Are those dual throttle bodies on the plenums? Or are there individual throttle bodies for each runner?
Any trick shifter stuff planned with the seq? Paddle shift, air shift, etc.
Stock rear end? Or something else. What sort of ratios come in the trans.

Each cyl has a Y shaped intake runner with a shorter straight runner and a long smaller runner from the opposing plenum (for better low-mid range).
There's an additional crossover between the upper plenums.

I'm going to start with a rally style shifter, tall lever, short stroke, right next to the steering wheel.
Paddle shifters are available, but more $$ than I want to drop into it right now (~$5K) and I can always upgrade in the future if I wanted.

I'm going to start with a factory rear end, there are plenty of track Miatas running around on those that make about the same or even a bit more WTQ than the Ferrari engine will...
There are no hard launches in time attack and I have the factory rear end in pretty much every ratio sitting on the shelf in the shop so it'll be very easy to change ratios to different tracks, should I decide to do so.
I'm treating this as a "if it's not broken don't fix it", and if I start breaking them I'll come up with a different solution.
Until then, this is an easy button that costs $0.00, it's light and needs zero screwing around with.

Cool. I would love to see more pictures of the actual fabrication process. Even if they are after the fact. I like seeing good finished products, but the actual steps behind them are what really interest me. (Fender vent build, flat bottom, etc)

Everyone likes the process shots, and in this project there should plenty of things that I can show without giving away trade secrets, but not everything.

The DFV is actually pretty close to the power figures of the 360 Modena engine, at least in its' original state.

Agreed...Especially the part about the support from this forum.
Not sure if the admins know this, but once the title is changed I no longer get notifications to that thread.

Is that the 400hp Mondetta engine?
If so there is a 11.2 piston (425hp) for that motor if you can get a dealer to give it to you. The throttle response is much better yet ...and it sounds even better!

Yes you do. There is even a permanent redirect that is left in place to the old thread title link. So even if a URL changes the old title URL will redirect to the new thread.

Neither, we're going to cut the whole thing off because my plan is to set the engine about a foot backwards.
