Getting a tune on a fully mech diesel = getting a modded injector pump and/or adjusting it.

Do you have head studs? I always remember reading you need to be really careful with the 6.0 unless you do a certain amount of upgrades. Always made me nervous about playing around with my 6.0

This now sounds adequate to tow a Miata on an open trailer.

Depends, it needs to be at least an F350 for an open trailer. F550 would be preferred.

I hand calc every tank. It will be next week before I refuel.

No studs. Running a medium level SCT "headbolt safe" ECM tune and a PHP Economy FICM tune.
I've done the coolant flush and am running the red coolant now with a filter. My oil and EGR coolers are good. Will do an EGR delete at some point, I'd love to do it now, but it's supposedly a 12 hour job...

I think you need dual rear wheels to tow a Miata, but it may work for the Exocet.

Its gonna ride like ass, and make you tired before you even start racing. It might also need to be registered and insured as a commercial vehicle depending on your state laws. At the very least its probably going to need the words "not for hire" and "carries no cash" to be legal to haul with in most states. I was really thinking about it when I found a bunch in more or less the price range of just a trailer, but the hassle of it just aint worth it.

IDK, I think a newer one probably won't be as bad and it would beat 85 miles one way of commuting to the track in the Miata. I wouldn't need to pay $70/month for storage of a trailer, either.

I've ridden in a "newer" one, its still not pleasant, I wouldnt want to take it to events more than an hour or two away, but those quickly get into serious money. I've also ridden in a 2012 model, it was a bit more comfortable, but also cost over 100k.

It's also a pickup without a bed. You've got very little room to store extra gear compared to what you'd get with a truck/SUV and a trailer.

I think I had heard of "headbolt safe" tunes once before, I was not sure if it is something I would trust. I am curious to see how successful it is for you.

Apparently the EGR and studs job is more manageable if you pull the cab off of the chassis, which with the right tools only takes like 40 min.


As far as fuel economy, supposedly diesels in general get better fuel economy from power upgrades as long as you are not driving like a drag racing car.

There are tons of 6.0 trucks out there running tunes on stock headbolts. R&R heads is a 40 hour job.

Higher power tunes do result in better economy if you don't drive like a savage. I think it's a combination of more boost when accelerating (resulting in less time accelerating and more time cruising) and more aggressive injector timing (resulting in less fuel required to make the same power). I am no diesel expert however. The more I figure out about tuning compression ignition, the more I find it's different than spark ignition tuning.
