I'd be more worried about the ungodly long hoses filled with water than getting airflow through it. I mean the Lotus crowd seems to do just fine getting airflow through the back of the car, I don't see why it couldn't be done. But all that water weight is going to add up quick.

We are working on it for a friends Solo XP S2000. We have already moved the heat exchanger for the A2W to the back.

For those worried about heat dissipation, if you use aluminum tubing under the car, it acts as an extra heat exchanger (add fins too for more surface area). We found on the XP car that the extra plumping dissipates a good amount of heat before it even gets to the heat exchanger (and that is just rubber hosing right now).

Yes, you are moving weight to the rear of car, but if you plan on the plumping under the car being part of the heat exchange, you can possible size your radiator down some as well. Thus the additional weight of the system would be minimal.

Ducting would be the big issue I see. In the XP car we are just going to put fan on there, but the car only see's 60-90 of time at full tilt.

Nick,
Get your exhaust made out of 20ga stainless. Burns has it in stock. Also you could get your charge pipes made out of aluminum.

You've gone soooo far already, why not just go all the way:

 Do it, I dare you!

well that's the least of our worries on our project crx. it weighs less than 1900lbs without being fully gutted. what we do worry about is the fact that it would get hot after only a few laps in the tx heat. also, we had to run a half width radiator because there isn't any room between the radiator/support and the turbo/manifold. also the piping isn't huge, it fits maybe an extra 1 gallon of water.

Two piece rotors:

Only drops 1/2 lb each, but it drops it where it counts.

is it possible to move the 15:1 rack and pinion from the powered steering rack to the manual rack housing? the manual rack looks lighter. (i do like the 15:1 ratio so would prefer to modify rather than use 18:1 manual rack).

or, even better, were there any years with 15:1 manual rack?

EDIT: looks like a 4 lb mod. i thought it was more. ref: https://www.miataturbo.net/showpost....3&postcount=23

the question should be: does the miata rack interchange with other cars that might have a faster manual rack?

Yeah, why arent there more track cars on here with no windshield or top?

curly 09-08-2010 10:51 PM

Whole different class of car, both literally and figuratively. The bad ass track cars on here have full cages, which would look retarded without a windshield. Aero reasons too I'm sure.

Edit: Can't anyone make a stock (non-locost) chassis look decent without front fenders? This looks semi-open wheel and extremely badass:

P.S. I'm also making this thread a sticky, seems logical for future viewers.

The chump car some friends and I are building we are doing MAJOR weight savings on. We are going to see just how light we can make the thing.

We've cut out the rear shelf seatbelt towers are. Front windsheild and will be doing a shit ton of extra weight savings stuff.

There's one on the lightweightmiata forum somewhere that is completely striped, including hood, trunk, rear quarter panels, etc. Can't find it though.

I think it had a little more body in the back, and less DIY bodywork in the front. It may have just been an older version of that one. I like it though.

My response to the pictures on this page:

I'd like da 15x9 wheel, like right now do.

curly 09-10-2010 01:05 AM

No it was blue, but that one is nice too. All I remember is it was basically a car with no body panels. It didn't look like it conformed to any class like the above red one, it was mariner blue, and I believe on an autocross starting grid.
