Default what hp would a build 1.6 and 1.8 engine take

I am just wondering what the maximum built hp a 1.6 and 1.8 engine would take, obviously with supporting mods?

I am talking about forged pistons etc?

thanks

you could probably take a 1.6L to 450-500rwph or so, a 1.8L to 550-600rwhp or so, and a 2.0L beyond that.

Head work is the key to big power. A stock head will really stop you from getting past 500hp easily!

Hi Froogle,

It really depends on how much time & money you have to spend on the project.
But I guess 500Bhp+ could be achieveable (you seen the youtube vid of the Greek guy with a high powered MX5?)

Although at that power level you'll have to swap out most of the driveline etc.. as well...

thanks for the replies. So why do people do a 1.8 conversion then? Why not just build their 1.6 with forged internals? Wouldn't it be easier?

no replacement for displacement. and we have plenty of folk with built motors. but we are also reasonable with our boosted needs. unlike the honda folk. 300rwhp on 195s sure isn't fun.

which 1.8 engine would be the best? I can get a 1999 engine easily

I already have a 1.6 engine with greddy turbo, 550cc injectors, spec 2 1.8 clutch and emerald ecu

would I still be able to use the engine with these mods?

cheers

I'd have to say that the 99 would be the best to build due to head design, but if your aspirations are for 500+, the 01+ might be better. For those up on the newer ones, isn't there a crank girdle or something on the 01 or 02?

you could swap the injectors over....

you want +300rwhp, build the motor, perform massive headwork and ditch the greddy crap

400whp, just keep turning the boost up until you get there, ignore that thing that sounds like BB's in a can.

But really, people make over 300whp on stock block but the general "safe" consensus is 250.

However, keep in mind that you can blow up your motor while making less power than stock. It is all about the tune. Knock and you are dead in the water. Keep knock suppressed and you will have a happy boosted life.

AMEN!!
bigger displacement, even with same peak hp, will feel so much better: torque is awesome

Purchase the M-Tuned 1.8 Greddy Swap Manifold and your Greddy Turbo will support 300hp on a 1.8. My old buddy Danny got 290 from his Greddy at 16-17psi on a stock 94-97 1.8 with supporting Mods (Exhaust etc)!
People don't seem to know how good that Greddy Turbo works on a 1800cc BP engine!

Injectors should be fine to right around 300hp if you install a Walbro 255HP and dial your base fuel pressure to around 45-50psi. (My Opinion)

Clutch SHould be okay and ECU I don't know anything about!
