Default C38R Heat Issues

Teeeeechnically not for a Miata, but I HAVE a Miata so I'm going to throw this up here. I have a C38R that we are installing at work. Someone (not me, but I checked the work and missed it) hooked up the oil connections backwards. We proceeded to run for a few minutes at low rpm. It made some funny noises and the installer finally read the manual correct and switched the hoses. Now we are running and the Rotrex oil is getting super hot. Is the supercharger wrecked? Can it be repaired? Who does those repairs? Rotrex says they won't repair, just replace.

Thanks!

I don’t own a Rotrex, but there are two good YT vids that talk about opening them up, it appeared the case just held fluid, but didn’t seem particularly dependent on the flow direction. I could be wrong.

Oiling prep is important - no different than an engine. Rotrex wants them “primed” (pre-filling hoses and cooler) as much as possible before startup. they also had some instructions they added later about the pump being at the “top” of the system to mitigate air pockets. Apparently some early install manuals didn’t clarify that. As long as mechanical intuition was used and the pump was topped up as the system was filled without air pockets, you’re probably good. You might try loosening the top banjo to ensure any remaining air is purged,

You’d need to clarify “super hot” with a numeric value. Rotrex recommends inlet oil not to exceed 175F. I doubt it’s broken. You might want to ensure the system is properly cooled with a temp gauge (IR gun?) and adjust cooler location/size/cooler fan if necessary. No sense buying a new one if it’s gonna lack cooling the next attempt.

We have a thermocouple on the feed to the Rotrex, peak temp was 75C before we shut down (ambient temp was 7C). They recommend not exceeding 80C. We added a cooler and fan after that and it kept temps around 45-50C.

We did prime the supercharger beforehand following Rotrex's instructions. Suction side depends on which was the supercharger is spinning, we have a CW charger so the suction is on the right. We had it hooked up on the left initially, so it was not pulling oil.
