Can confirm, I did exactly this with one piece axles. No arm-axle interference. Used some zip ties to hold everything out of the way. Super easy.

I spent three hours just trying to get my old axles out of the uprights. No amount of heat, impact, pressure, booze, incantations, etc. would get them out. Took it to a shop with a press, they got the axles out but bent the **** out of the upright in the process. Which I did not discover until I got the whole project done, and found that my car liked to scoot sideways like a crab and I couldn’t align the rear end.

Your best day is finding axles from front-end wreck that still have good looking CV joints, and just take the whole axle/upright assembly.

My original '01 axles resisted all of those things as well. I set up a penetrating oil drip with a heat lamp on it for a month. I tried heat + canned cold air. I broke two different pullers. Then I gave it to Aidan, who has bigger tools to break bigger things than I do, and he couldn't get them out either. This was on a salt-free NW car, too. The rear axles really like to stay in the rear hubs sometimes.

I just got done swapping rear hubs and bearings. One came apart with a slide hammer, the other side resisted both that and the press. I did eventually get it out with an air hammer, but it mushroomed the end of the axle in the process, junking it. Ah well, at least I got to reuse the upright.

I just used the HF axle puller to pull the hubs out of the spindles. I had to custom make the adapter to fit the 4x100 pattern and I only had to reweld the adapter back together 3 times to get both hubs.

Seems like that's probably more work than just navigating the diff past the axles.

I've only done one piece axles. I pop them out of the diff after undoing the RUCA-outer bolt, the upright folds out around the axis of the lower bolt taking the inner end out of the way of the diff housing. If dropping the diff, some juggling might be needed to avoid the diff ears and the axles getting in each others way, but I can't ever recall this being an issue. If just replacing the pineapple, with the axles out you are good to go.

^^ this is how I do it. I find that the brakes have to be unbolted and tied aside to allow the upright to be pulled far enough out.
