The best air suspension I've driven is OE Mercedes. It's still not nearly as good ride or handling as a bone-stock, relatively low-miles E36 M3.

Airbags suck so much as an aftermarket product idea that even Bridegestone couldn't get airbag suspension off the ground selling it to people who care about handling with significant engineering resources and a multi-year media blitz.

Basically, bags only work for applications that change sprung weight by significant multiples, like 3x or 10x, and need to be able to drive safely in both modes.

Even SCC didn't like them, lol.

Bags are fine for minis and lowriders, but they have no place in the sportscar realm. It's fun sometimes to drive my brother's truck, laying the body flat on the pavement when parked and all that, but not as much fun as traction and boost.

Audi Glossary: 4-Level Air Suspension

4-level air suspension at the front and rear axles is standard technical equipment on the Audi allroad quattro. Thanks to ground clearance that can be raised as high as 208 millimetres and the standard quattro drive, this model can also negotiate difficult terrain. The total variation in ground clearance is 66 millimetres, with four ride heights that can be selected manually or automatically. Two ride heights are regarded as ‘high’, one ‘normal’ and one ‘lowered’. The automatic mode varies the ride height according to the vehicle’s road speed. Displays on the centre console tell the driver which setting is currently in use. Air suspension makes the Audi allroad quattro extremely versatile: since the ground clearance can be varied, it is not only suitable for off-road use but also for regular on-road driving.
Audi seems to have found a reason for using air suspension... hmm seems they went the opposite way the OP is interested in. Seems to me they should have put it on the TTs or the A3s so people could drop that **** super low w0rd.

There is a similar system on Lamborghinis that allows the nose to be lifted to clear steep inclines/speed bumps.

Anyone remember some of the air systems that are performance oriented? I know that Praxxis had one for the WRX/STi that improved handling and whatnot, but it also wasn't marketed as a "coushy" bag system to be used to raise and lower the car for looks.

The Lambo system is hydraulic, FWIW. There's a small cylinder built into the strut. A similar system is now on the aftermarket for certain Euros.

how did I miss this thread?

also, where do people get the idea that airbags handle?
every car that Ive seen run bags essentially has no suspesnion travel, it just bounces like youre on insanely stiff springs, and if you made the bags softer then it would just be mushy because there is no dampening...
