Has anyone destroyed a quaife gear box yet?

Time to make an adapter plate for a TKO600...

Any insight as to why it let go? I'm curious as to whether it is a torque related failure, or possibly heat related. IF it's getting too hot, maybe we need to look into the gear oil that is being used. Anyone know how the Lucas oil stabalizer holds up to heat? The standard formula can be used as gear oil. I run it in the diff.

I think a year of severe road course use at 270-300whp is probably what did it. Nothing lasts forever in road race cars. I'll UOA the oil to see if a cooler will improve longevity, but I'm going to put another 6-speed into it.

Got the UOA results back today, no signs of viscosity breakdown or increased insolubles = no overheating fluid. It still might help, but there's no immediate tranny temp problem that needs to be solved ASAP (at least not in my car).

Good info to know, I sort of suspected based on looking at my fluid it never seemed burnt.

TKO's are badass. Bunch of gearsets, 600 lb/ft rating, compact,
new, warrantied & made by Americans etc.

I've seen them as cheap as $1500 new, but you'd still need an adapter.

I've read of a few S2000 drivers using them; their Aisin 6-speeds are similar to Miatas & die pretty quickly from drag racing above 300 wtq.
Here's an S2000 tunnel shot of a TKO-600 (& LSX), should fit pretty nicely in a Miata.

Hi I got in touch with a U.K based oil specialist.
asking best oils for our gearboxes I mentioned they strip teeth when we start to make higher power so asked for an oil to try prevent this from happening.
here is what they wrote back:

I'd go for a good 75w-90 ester oil for the gearbox, the Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX NT and Motul Gear 300 would be very good choices.

I would say a good 5w-40 would probably be the way to go, unless you are getting high (over 125C) oil temps, then a 10w-50 is the best choice.

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. They are all really good oils and up to dealing with the modifications.

Ester oils are the top oils on the market as they are more stable at higher temperatures, leave a layer of oil over the inside of the engine/gearbox/diff (like the Castrol Magnatec adverts claim) and in general are better lubricants.

The Redline Lightweight Shockproof is also a good choice to use, it's also ester based.

Just FYI for everyone, TrackDayHookey lost his 6-speed at the last Miata Challenge event at the beginning of October. Same failure mode as mine, steady pull in 4th gear. Similar power, less torque than I make. That makes 3 power-related failures this year that I know of (JayL, me, and TDH). All 3 boxes saw prolonged hard abuse at well over 300whp. If I blow another before next summer, a different gearbox may be in order.

Will you make a TSE conversion kit of some sort? Which gearbox do you have in mind?

Would the RX-7 FD tranny be a better and stronger option for a high hp Miata than the 6 speed?

Oh definitely. They've lasted on two 400whp Miatas here in Greece. We had one that snapped the input shaft on a 480 FD-powered RX-8.
