I could not run iscracing tophats, with 8" 250# rear springs without binding. I had to either drop the ride below 11" or put a spacer above the bumpstop negating the point.

OP, this info is somewhat useless without knowing what ride heights you are thinking of running, and particularly, WHAT TIRE ARE YOU GOING TO BE USING?? With more grip, you are going to need more spring. Also, echoing what is being said, you really need to match shock valving with spring rate.

For street and occasional autocross without regard to competitiveness, and on a street tire, you could use a 700/400ish combo with the right shock and get a good ride, but you'll have to pay for the "right shock." For the street, imo something like a 400/250 combo on some sort of OTS quality shock will be "good enough" without breaking the bank. A pretty popular starter combo would be a Koni Sport adjustable front and a non-adjustable Koni rear. That would be sufficient for a 400/250, and be reasonably inexpensive.

I'm trying to get rid of my konis. I want something monotube and not shitty, they've been harsh since day one; with stock springs, FM springs, 550/300 and 400/250 springs.

I rode in another miata the other day with BC Racing Coilovers in 560/450 rates and it felt better in every aspect. I cried a little.

My next best option, personally, is to trade for some stiffer springs, and beg a low-buck re-revalve of my billies. It's hard to justify even a ~$2k setup these days, even though I'd be the first to admit that it would be better.

Custom re-valved Bilsteins are a world apart from Koni, but not much more expensive than new Koni Sports, which are presently running about $630 at Tirerack.

You can compromise for the street by running big bars and softer springs to get that track car planted feeling.

Lots of rebound damping will do that too, but your ride goes to hell on anything but the smoothest of roads.

I'm in this setup cheap, so it'll work for now. Koni sports, 450/300 qa1's, GC sleeves and fm rear hats set at 12"f/12.5"r FM align. spec. w/ stock sways for now. good enough to play on the old country roads and some autox.
