Tongue weight unloads the front wheels and can cause issues steering. On a triple axle like that you want the weight mostly balanced over the wheels with a slight forward bias. I've seen people pull double decker 40+ foot race car trailers with F-350's. Having 2 or 3 axles, and good trailer brakes makes the trailer almost drive itself.

Honestly, I'm glad the couple made it OK. The cars don't look that banged up either. All in all it could have been MUCH worse.
Ian is on his way out there right now trailering his beast, he'll have more info shortly I'd imagine.

If I read this right, F350 from that era should be good for about 12,500 LB trailer weight. That is obviously a heavy trailer but I would be surprised if they were overweight.
Doesn't Savington tow with a similar rig? I seem to remember him posting a picture of a similar size chevy pulling 2 miatas on a trailer.

I didn't think the weight was the issue, but rather the relationship (ratio) between the wheelbase of the towing vehicle and the "'ball-to-axle" distance of the trailer. Just from a gut feeling standpoint, it seems that trailer would have incredible leverage over that pickup, with the most obvious result being what we see in that very accident. I've towed some pretty sketchy loads myself, and I know people tow all kinds of loads and get away with it just fine, but it doesn't necessarily legitimize it as "safe" practice IMO.
