Aidan beat me to it, that F350 "should" have been ok with that load. I was going to make a comment about tongue weight, but who knows if that's how far forward that car was originally loaded.

Since when can't an F-350 handle that load? I see 350s loaded down way way way more than that hauling construction equipment/farming **** around here

Tongue weight should make it more stable, no?

Tongue weight unloads the front wheels and can cause issues steering. On a triple axle like that you want the weight mostly balanced over the wheels with a slight forward bias. I've seen people pull double decker 40+ foot race car trailers with F-350's. Having 2 or 3 axles, and good trailer brakes makes the trailer almost drive itself.

Honestly, I'm glad the couple made it OK. The cars don't look that banged up either. All in all it could have been MUCH worse.

Ian is on his way out there right now trailering his beast, he'll have more info shortly I'd imagine.

My thought exactly. The biggest it could be based on the pics is a 3/4 ton im guessing.

Edit- Read the rest if the thread dumbass, lol. I stand corrected.

The emblem on the back of the truck is hard to read.

If I read this right, F350 from that era should be good for about 12,500 LB trailer weight. That is obviously a heavy trailer but I would be surprised if they were overweight.

Doesn't Savington tow with a similar rig? I seem to remember him posting a picture of a similar size chevy pulling 2 miatas on a trailer.

I seriously doubt that trailer is over 12k. 2 miatas are what 5500 at most?

Brief googling shows a 34ft trailer (biggest I saw) was 5600.

I didn't think the weight was the issue, but rather the relationship (ratio) between the wheelbase of the towing vehicle and the "'ball-to-axle" distance of the trailer. Just from a gut feeling standpoint, it seems that trailer would have incredible leverage over that pickup, with the most obvious result being what we see in that very accident. I've towed some pretty sketchy loads myself, and I know people tow all kinds of loads and get away with it just fine, but it doesn't necessarily legitimize it as "safe" practice IMO.

Always check to see whether the car is in gear before starting it.
