^ Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Or a P1. Obviously I'd need few test drives.

This is a little old but here is some idea on how a F1 aero works

I made a post about this on my other Thread (Radiator Hood Vent) and I quote from what I said "Ive been looking around on the internet and found some people making a hood vent for their radiator. Then using a front diffuser behind the splitter to supply air to the intercooler and vents the intercooler air into the engine bay/down the trani tunnel (above the flat underbody)."

The reason why I'm posting this here "again" is that it isn't really Hood Vent related and all aerodynamics related. The McLaren P1 uses little mechanical diffusers in front of the front tires to offset the variable wing settings. If they offset the wing that much, then there should be alot more downforce to come from under the engine compartment. So here are some pics of what I found.

One other thought, besides packaging limitations, is that I shudder thinking about going off-track with the inlet for my intercooler or radiator in the underside of the car.

My flat bottom has taken a beating, repaired it twice, splitter has seen three repairs... I'm guessing I'd have had to replace the heat exchanger at least once by now with that kind of air source.

It all depends. Those designs are made for cars that are rebuilt every race.

Anybody know how to make the Aero paint or have a idea for something that is already out on the market?

My only thoughts on doing it cleanly, without paint, is a steam cleaner with a hose ran to the front and a Gopro to record where the steam goes. Or rent/make a leakdown tester with smoke.

I've heard of water based crayola paints working, you just have to adjust the consistency a bit so it only flows when moving. Then you just wash off. You could also make some with cornstarch and food coloring...

you can use crayola powder paint (or some other fluorescent powder), some paraffin (which evaporates quickly), and oleic acid (to prevent coagulation).

Gumpert Apollo Underbody. It creates it's weight in downforce at 120 mph and most of it is due to it's underbody.

^ Finished my new upgraded splitter this weekend and it shares a lot of similarities with the Gumpert's actually..

That seems like a scary way to hold that car on a lift haha.

Nobody lean on it!

Question High mount tuft testing?

I have built a wing to our sports sedan regs, which allows it to go as high as the roof, and hang up to 100mm behind the rear face of the bumper. My mount is rather 949ish, though that is not relevant to my question.

I have been unable to locate any airflow data for the area immediately in front of my wing - either my google-fu is deficient, or it isn't out there. The reason for this interest is obviously to get some AoA settings for the wing based on airflow data, rather than only 'feel', or lap times. I just watched Emelio's video in which he says he doesn't know how the air behaves in this region, and if he doesn't know ...

Is anyone aware of any MX5-specific data/video/etc for this region?

I plan to do some tuft testing over the next few weeks, but if the wheel has already been invented, that would be nice...

I will post the video (if the info doesn't turn up elsewhere).

Edit: realized this image is a photoshop. Here's the link if you still want to look at the pretty colors.

Hardtop Leafy.

Thanks JP. I am blown away by the angle of that bottom trail as it crosses the boot, and the lack of any indication of turbulence behind the rear window in the clear boundary of the smoke(?) there.

JP, that photo set me off on a new search trail - thanks.
