Default 11's on the Motor, 9's on the Nitrous

That is my goal. I have been wanting to do this for quite some time, and I think that I have enough experience now that I can pull it off.

Apparently, there are already Miatas that have gone in the 11s on the (BP) motor according to Rebello Racing. I was hoping to be the first to do it, but that is not to be.

Some of the car has already been prepped to meet this goal. The fuel system is already adequete to go in the nines easily, and most of the weight reduction has been completed. All of the wiring is completed to run the nitrous. My ignition can handle it. I did some pretty extensive work on the cylinder head, and all I need to do now is camshaft development.

I am going to pull my motor, and put in rods, oil pump, balancer, and a few other items. I do not think that I will get the job done with this motor even with some of the improvements, but we will see. I still plan to use this motor as the development motor, and then build my spare motor from scratch once I feel the chassis, fuel system, saftey items, cylinder head and induction are up to speed. Oh yah. I plan to do a transmission of some sort, but I have not nailed it yet. I am leaning towards the Quaife 5 speed. I intend to run the numbers with the IRS suspension.

As of right now, I decided to park the car. I am getting some parts together, so the car will not be in pieces for too long. Do not expect for this to happen over night. At least a year.

The coolest thing you possibly could have done is complete your project, run 11's or 9's with nitrous, THEN post a thread about it.

Good luck.

That quaife is a piece of ****, you're wasting your time, and you're totally queer. I believe that several miatas are running 11's on the motor, that's why there is so much publicity of it and why there are so many youtube videos to back it up.

I have been thinking about whether or not to do that thread title for months. I thought it would add to the drama. I may go down in shame, or I may do all or part of the goal. In the end I thought, what the hell.

Where's the pictures? I want to see some carburetors and a picture of you looking at some fuel injectors and an ecu with a puzzled look.

Good luck dude That would be very impressive! So what kind of times are you currently running? Tires? What size wheels? Rearend? Come on, give us some details!

What I want to know is how you are planning to compete with JayL and ApexOnYou with nearly 1/2 the power.

Edit: Your first post mentions a strong ingnition system??? What is it!

IF you can hit 9's I will literally **** a cactus. We have 2 vipers, one with a Hennessy motor and a 150 shot using a mix of propane/nitrous/118 octane race gas and the best we got that car on (on street tires) was 10.2 @140.

Head is fully ported with 1mm over valves, valve springs from Flyin Miata, and shim under bucket lifters. The current cam is from Web Cam with an anemic 237 advertised duration/214 @.050, and .370" lift. I will likely have the head flowed to help me select a new cam, and take .030" off the surface to bring the compression up a little more.

The ignition is an Electromotive coil pack mounted under the dash. I have posted times recently. I need to get the thread moved to the right section. I have many of the details of my set up in that thread. Check out the timeslip section under quick link, you will see the fastest et.

Nice Please don't think i'm against you in any way. I am all for you posting up some great times. What I want to know is how you plan to shave nearly 1-1/2 seconds off your e.t. and still stay N/A. I know headwork and technique is going to be the key but, what do you have up your sleeve?

How much nitrous are you planning on running with that unfriendly high compression of yours?

Correct if I am wrong (I often am) but the only way to make this possible would be to make an engine that can rev to stupid high RPMs and breath well while doing it (monster cam and valves) so that you can stay in the lower gears for as much of the track as possible. Because no NA BP motor is going to make the kind of TQ needed for meaningful acceleration after 3rd gear.

So if you dont mind posting it, what kind of shift RPM from 1-2 and 2-3 are you gunning for?

As I do the build I will post what I am doing at the time. The biggest thing that I plan to do, is set the car up specifically for drag racing. There are several people on this forum that could get in the nines if they set up the suspension, gearing, wheel and tire, and tuned for the drag strip. It really is not a lofty goal.

I am not sure how much nitrous it will take yet. I will start small, and work my way up. The compression is not really that unfriendly. With higher compression motors, a certain 'shot' of nitrous will usually net more horsepower than on lower compression motors, as long as the the 'shot' is not very high. However, when you start using larger shots, the higher compression motors seem to hit a brick wall and not go any faster, but lower compression motors will continue to see gains on the higher shot and may go faster than a high compression motor in an all out let's see how fast we can go scenerio. That is my experience anyways.

Another factor, is that a really large camshaft will bleed off some compression as well as allow the engine to inhale a larger shot of nitrous. A lot of nitrous gets spit out of the exhaust, but with correct cam timing, you can correct a lot of that out. Since the goal is to run really fast on the motor, but not necessarily super low ETs on the nitrous, I need to make a compromise. It is more important to have the compression up to get the N/A motor to work. I think that in the end, I will be around 14:1 compression. A lot of racers, including me, have had good success with that kind of compression and running nitrous.

Good Luck... I've had an 11.00 boosted miata and worked as a member of a low mid 10 second Honda All - Motor drag team.

It took 270hp and a car and driver weight of 2000lbs to get the Honda in the 10.5 range and this was on a 24.5x9 inch slick cutting some 1.37 60fts IIRC.

How much power do you think you can make all motor, and how light can you get your car?

I think 225 horsepower will get the job done. What do you think?

Car and driver will be close to 2000. I have not weighed it yet, but I know I am making at the very best 170 horsepower currently, and went 13.38 so far.

I started tearing the motor down to get ready to pull it. I may have it out tomorrow. I have made the decision to send the crank out to Rebello to do a small amount of lightening. At the same time, I am going to have him clearance a new set of rods and bearings to the crank journals properly.

Once I get the bill paid and parts back, I am sending him the head to get proper flow numbers, and correct any problems I have with the head. Camshafts to follow.
