TBH, I'm pretty skeptical of some prices you've listed in your build... You got a hard dog roll bar for 50$? WHERE?! And was it "USED" (ie, in a car that rolled over??)

Also like to add, LMAO over here at "spoolin 2 bars" anti-megasquirt bullshit. Please. Just please. :jerkit:

Supra owners don't use megasquirt because most of them are loaded douchers that'll buy the most expensive thing that can be found. Every 2jz owner I know is anyway.

Here is a pic of the Roll bar I got for $50 and I added the lower crossbar got the pipe for free and put some new paint on it it was silver so 20 min worth of work and 60 bucks and she is done and looking good.

m2cupcar 01-12-2010 12:26 PM

dman! how'd you land that for $50?

Sean 01-12-2010 12:46 PM

It was on craigslist some guy sold his miata and the guy who bought the car didn'y want it so he took it off with the intentions of selling it and after it sat in the garage for 3 years he put it on craigslist for $50 and I went and got it the same day so no one else would snatch it up.

That's it youre on my Hate/envy/Non-street cred. list

Ok so for an update I found an RX-7 TII rear for cheap and I figured out with some reaseach you can use the 1.8L axles from a 94 and up and the RX-7 rear bolts in with the addition of a bracket of some sort to hold the snout of the rear from moving around. This is all fine and dandy I just need some axles and some time and were good to go.

Oil pan fabrication

Here are some pics of the oil pan now that it has been cut so you can see what I need to be fabed and welded.

I'm sure someone here will do that for cheap, but you could also spend the same money and buy yourself a cheap harbor freight MIG and do it yourself.

Nice build so far.

Sean 01-13-2010 10:52 PM

I have a millermatic 252 I thought that a mig weld would leak. I am a decent welder and we have the tools to do it if it will work.

Here is my glove box I just finished carbon fiber wraping let me know what you all think. This is the first time I have done this and I do have good mechanical knowledge but I honestly sat down and read about it for like 3 days and watched youtube videos for another 2 days and all in all it came out good. Its for nothing other than looks considering it actually added weight to the car but it looks hella good.

I think the carbon fiber adds street cred value right?

gospeed81 01-13-2010 11:00 PM

Wait....wut?

I click on the stinkin' 2JZ Miata thread and see a carbon wrapped glovebox....not the kind of update I was hoping for.

Seriously Sean, this is turning out to be an awesome build. I thought you had to be delusional when you started this, but you're slowly proving that what sounds ridiculous can be done, and done well with patience and ease.

Looking forward to the final product.

Sean 01-13-2010 11:05 PM

The glove box was just a fun thing to throw in this weekend I'll be doing the RX-7 rear swap minus the axles because I don't have them yet but there will be pix of the energy suspensions bushings going in along with the fab work for the rear and. I thought I would add that this build started as an idea that we all thought was crazy and it gets better and better everyday one day soon I am going to own the streets with this thing and I can't wait to see the next guy do this I am trying to start a 2JZ swap wave across the country.

mx5autoxer 01-13-2010 11:51 PM

If I had the space, I'd be all on a 2JZ swap. Maybe after college :x:. And about the carbon fiber. Its riceyness is far out weighed by the cars badassness.

WonTon 01-14-2010 02:25 AM

if i had the money id be doing the shit now! :D

that wrap job looks good, i may have to send you a glove box to do for me cause im to lazy to research and do it myself!

miataliker 01-14-2010 03:09 AM

That is sick!!

Send away but I must tell you that it will take a little while I am a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff

WonTon 01-14-2010 03:52 PM

how much would it cost?

I PM'd you

Sean 01-14-2010 05:30 PM

I just want to throw this out there to see if there are any takers. I have come to notice that my beautiful tan canvas top with glass back window will not work with my roll bar. So I would like to propose a trade for a black top vinyl or canvas in good condition with a vinyl back window preferably one that opens but not real worried about it. I would like to find it local but I will ship if I have to. If there are any takers please PM me I will post pics of my top later tonight.

Ok got the intercooler mounted tonight it fits pretty good. I have to do some tweaking to the bracket so I can squeeze a radiator and fan in before the motor. If anyone has any Ideas where I can get a super low-pro fran that might fit. I need the thinest one possible.

gospeed81 01-14-2010 11:06 PM

Geez...that's not much space.

I had forgotten you were still gonna turbocharge it. That in-depth of a swap and I wouldn't have blamed ya for getting it running n/a first.

The intercooler is already pretty far forward but,any chance of squeezing it into the mouth? Maybe switching to a more traditional style intercooler instead of using a downflow will make it easier to fit. You probably could free up a few inches and make life easier trying to fit a radiator.

And of course a big +1 on using a spal fans.

Btw, great build:drool:

mx5autoxer 01-15-2010 02:01 PM

do it subaru style and mount the ic on top of the engine and get a big ass hood scoop (since you have to cut up the hood anyway)

mx5autoxer 01-15-2010 02:10 PM

:bigtu:

Sean 01-15-2010 02:25 PM

I thought about that but I really don't want to see the intercooler when I'm driving down the road the engine is bad enough to see over. If the intercooler was on top I would need like a 8 inch cowl to cover everything and I wouldn't be able to see anything.

mx5autoxer 01-15-2010 03:59 PM

true. you could put it under the engine too like the oposite of ^ that, but that might not be too good on a street car.

mx5autoxer 01-15-2010 04:13 PM

I kinda like dual side mounts too. You'd need a gay-D-M tite body kit kind of bumper to get air to it though.

Sorry no gay body kits on this car

Ok I managed to put 10 lbs. of shit in a 5 lb. bag and here are the pics to prove it. I even have a 1/2 inch for fan clearance. Here you go. Now all I have to do is run the plumbing and some intercooler piping.

gospeed81 01-16-2010 07:42 AM

Very very cool.

miataliker 01-17-2010 07:19 PM

Here is a pic of the stance of my car with the engine trans and new RX-7 rear in it. Still do not have the battey in or the drive shaft and no gas so it will go down a little more. I also got all the rear suspension rebuilt with all new energy suspension bushings and the rear has energy suspension bushings as well. the pics are not that great but you get the idea. I still need to fab up some sort of rear bracket to hold the nose of the rear.

SKMetalworks 01-18-2010 12:34 AM

Looks dope. How are you gonna cut the hood?

Sean 01-18-2010 12:49 AM

I haven't really figured that out yet but I am trying to convince my body guy to do it for me that way he can mess it up. For the time being it will go with out.

hingstonwm 01-18-2010 01:13 AM

Cool Swap, you have made some fantastic progress in a hurry!! But to be honest I am disappointed by how high the engine sits above the hood line. I like the idea of crushing the guy in the corvette with his girl or the guy in the porsche for that matter, but all that engine sticking out advertising its intention kind of takes away from the idea. There is something to be said for the whole sleeper theory!!

elesjuan 01-18-2010 01:45 AM

I'm really digging this build suddenly..

Just wish you could pull off not cutting a hole in the hood.. It'd be so much better all concealed under it..

mx5autoxer 01-18-2010 12:21 PM

I say just go with a DIY cowl induction hood. It'll keep people from seeing the beast plus it might be bait for muscle car guys. They'll be like "look at this fag. He put a hood on his miata and thinks he's fast. I'm gonna smoke his ass" Then a couple minutes later they're on the side of the road crying and wondering what just happened.

Sean 01-19-2010 10:23 AM

I am still looking into getting a cowl I just have to wait to see how much actually sticks out of the hood. If I can get away with like a 6 inch cowl I will otherwise I'm gonna have to think of something else.

hingstonwm 01-19-2010 10:34 AM

A decent hood could end up being the most expensive part of your build. Looking at your build pics it looks like there is a substansial amount of engine that will be sticking up above the hood line.

ZX-Tex 01-19-2010 01:10 PM

If I remember correctly there is lots of discussion on cowl hoods in the engine conversion section at miata.net so you might want to look there.

mx5autoxer 01-19-2010 10:05 PM

From the pics I was thinking that you only had about 3-4 inches of engine above the hood. The turbo would make a cowl pretty wide though. And I dont think it should be too expensive if you or a friend custom fabs one. If it were me I'd cut a hole big enough in the hood and either buy or make a shroud/cowl to go over it and then rivet it to the hood. I think it would look tough.

I did't get a whole lot of time tonight but enough to do the exhaust so here it is I know you guys will have some stuff to say about this. :yippee:

gospeed81 01-20-2010 07:20 PM

umm...might get a little boost creep, and a lot more attention from cops

Sean 01-20-2010 07:22 PM

It will deff get attention from the cops boost creep will be ok as long as I can keep it below 14psi. If it gets higher than that I will need to change it but I think the 50mm wastegate will keep it down.

Jeff_Ciesielski 01-20-2010 07:22 PM

That is functional as hell. In for massive hood flame vids.

Sean 01-20-2010 07:24 PM

Oh there will be massive hood flames got my MSD box the other day and will soon have the two step module and then boom. I am picking up my harness this weekend and it takes 6 weeks to get back but I am going to try and have everything else done so I can run it when it comes in. Hells Yea

gospeed81 01-20-2010 07:33 PM

at least it comes out the in front of pass side windshield

So much for sleeper

Full_Tilt_Boogie 01-20-2010 09:16 PM

Thatll be tittyfuckin cool

hingstonwm 01-20-2010 09:44 PM

Not my cup of tea. Sorry dude, It's cool that you are doing the swap, but I am into much more "sano" installs. Im sure the thing will run like a raped ape, but it is not what I envision when I think of an engine swap. With your set up you are more likely to get grins and giggles from the guys you want to race...you know the ones with the clean Z06, and the "it looks like it belongs on the show room floor porsche" than any takers. I am willing to bet they will call it the fastest (insert your description here) they have ever seen, but you wont have any of them feeling that their cars are inferior to your creation.

I give you props for what you are doing, and there is something to be said for the straight line performance you are going to have. But there is also something to be said for elegant engineering solutions, and I hate to say it but this project is anything but elegant, I don't care how little you spend to get it done.

That being said, I respect that it is you ride; whatever makes you happy is cool. It's just not the way I would go about it.

Good luck with the rest of your build I will still be checking it out, and enjoying your progress. Cause weather I agree with your approach or not, I am a gearhead and I like performance, you are a gearhead and like performance so I respect what you do!

Full_Tilt_Boogie 01-20-2010 10:12 PM

I get what youre saying, but I think the lack of elegance makes it cool

I love the way the flyin miata track dog car looks because of its lack of elegance. Its all go, no show.
http://www.flyinmiata.com/projects/O...t/DSCN7934.jpg

just my .02

hingstonwm 01-20-2010 10:43 PM

What? that thing may be all go but it is engineered to the teeth. Look how nice the flares are and the front air dam...looks awesome and is functional. The engine is underneath a hood. The exhaust is not an after thought, stuck through the hood. There isin"t a true miata fan around that scratches their head when they look at the track dog.

Ok got some more work done today got the radiator and intercooler final mounted and got the upper radiator hose done. I also ran the turbo feed line and started the drain line but I need one more part. I got the oil pan done and it dosen't leak had it filled with water for half and hour and not a drop. Will post more progress tomorrow.

triple88a 01-24-2010 12:00 AM

hhmm engine looks way too far to the left.

Sean 01-24-2010 12:06 AM

The bell housing is offset on the 2JZ like an inch and a half so it looks off center but it is lined up perfect I can assure you.

hingstonwm 01-24-2010 01:28 AM

Is that radiator going to provide enough cooling?? There just doesn't look like there is enough surface area to be efficient.

You will have to report back and let us know if you run into any issues with cooling.

Sean 01-24-2010 01:05 PM

I'll let you know on the cooling the motors aren't known to run hot and the turbo is oil cooled only so it should be good to go.

Ok got the oil pan mounted the exhaust manifold mounted for the final time, lower intake manifold mounted to the final time, and some other odds and ends finished up. I'm waiting for the fuel pump to come in so I can put the bar in and finish the body welding on the passenger side. Here is a pic of the oil pan in the car.
