I think you should just go ahead and make a stack coming out with a clapper. Builds looking good btw.

Got a little work done today so far. Got the cage is mocked up just need to drill some holes, walbro 255 installed, found a giant mouse nest on top of the fuel tank and fuel pump so I have to fix some wires but it looks like it is contained to just the area under the fuel pump cover but I am going to keep an eye out for more chewed wires. Here is the pics of the cage and rats nest and the fuel pump installed in the modified sender.

fmowry 01-28-2010 08:36 AM

Friggin mice. I just pulled the motor from my wife's Sebring and there' was a nest both under the air filter and intake manifold. And the car was driven regularly.

We'll have to check each others cars out this spring/summer sometime. I'm 90% done with an LS6 swap. In Anne Arundel County just south of Baltimore of I-97.

Sounds good to me I should be done with mine in 2 months or so we will have to meet up and see what they look like.

Pitlab77 01-28-2010 06:16 PM

with out going through the whole thread has anyone noticed that this is a NA-T JZ motor

Not really a big deal.. in the IS community they just use a larger head gasket and still rock 350+ rwhp on the stock motor.

If you read the thread you would see that he has already addressed this, hes not trying to make a million hp :giggle:

Sean 01-29-2010 10:10 AM

The engine that is in my car is a 2JZGE not a 2JZGTE the GTE is the turbo motor but I have put a GTE head gasket and plugs in my car so I can still run upwards of 18psi of boost and be fine and the GE motor will make 500 HP with the stock internals it has. If you take into consideration that a GTE motor is $3000-$4000 and a GE motor is $1200 than the $800 to put pistons in and do some machine work to have the same thing as a GTE is no big deal. If my car ever makes it to 500hp and I decide that is not enough I will just get a GTE bottom end and throw more boost at it, but for now it will be fine.

leatherface24 01-29-2010 10:29 AM

you really have no clue how fast your car is going to be if you can get traction huh? I HIGHLY doubt you will want to cross the 500whp mark with this car lol. Good build btw.

Sean 01-29-2010 10:53 AM

I really don't want to cross to far over the 400hp range I have ridden in a legitimate 300hp miata and that was a handful so I don't want to get crazy unusably amounts of hp in a little car. I will shoot for 400 and if I accomplish that I will move up slowly until I think it has more than enough for the car then come down a lil. I also have nothing to judge this car against on how fast it will go there is really no good comparison to say it might do this or it might not do that. It will be a learning curve to say the least.

Got a little work done today its snowing pretty bad outside so I can't go to the store and get parts so I have to do what I got. I did get some progress though. I installed the roll bar most of the way need to tighten the bolts for the down bars. I picked up a set of sports brakes complete (used) they came with everything calipers, brackets, two sets of rotors, and pads for $150. I got my alternator and water pump pulley installed and they look great. I also remembered to pick up some nice hardware for my rollbar from work. Nice stainless cap head bolts. I will post some pics tomorrow of the calipers and rotors installed, and anything else I get done.

Here is a couple pics of the snow in Mt. Airy MD right now. This is out of control. The one picture is of my dogs out of the snow for comparison. The brown one is 65 lbs. and lanky and the yellow lab is 80 lbs. so you know they are not small dogs. I don't think I'm gonna be leaving the house any time soon.

The housing is out getting an elbow welded on and I was mocking up the oil return and the guys at the shop know someone would die if they broke my turbo.

i dont think he intended for it to be pretty. nor do i think he wants to spend the time to make it the prettiest thing youve ever seen. who really cares about looks anyways? fuck it. id much rather have a faster car that performs better than a production car worth 30 grand or more. and it really doesnt matter wether or not they think that it was made better then their corvette or not. chances are they dont know any of this; less weight, less cylinders, smaller wheelbase, smaller tires, better suspension, older platform, weaker transmission than the corvettes (w58,) smaller rear differential. the list goes on.

take ur prettied up f20c swap and go to a car show ;) jk

That being said, I respect that it is you ride; whatever makes you happy is cool. It's just not the way I would go about it.

Good luck with the rest of your build I will still be checking it out, and enjoying your progress. Cause weather I agree with your approach or not, I am a gearhead and I like performance, you are a gearhead and like performance so I respect what you do!

You left out an important part of my post when you quoted me. What the OP is doing is cool. Just not my cup of tea. IMO a conversion needs to be under the hood, not sticking out like a sore thumb (again this is my preference). I don't care for super shorty exhaust/dump tubes either. I highly doubt there is a cop in the world that would not pull this car over for loud exhaust. No muffler no cat...no thanks. Ear plugs will be a must while driving this car (if you value your hearing).

My idea of a successful conversion is one that will still allow me to use the car as a daily driver if I want to. One that I can leave outside in a rain or snow storm without having to worry about filling the engine full of water, or worse yet, sand, grit, or grime.

When complete this car may be a hell of a track bitch, but it will fall far short of what I would consider a quality conversion. (My opinion, I am allowed this)

I stress this again. It is Sean's build not mine, the only guy he has to please is himself. I am intrigued by his build though not interested in having one like this personally.

Keep up the good work Sean, your solutions to problems with the build are what keep me coming back.

By the way Banks, it is common practice and grammatically correct to capitalize the first word of a sentence in the English language ;)

I am not trolling for a fight, so lets just agree to disagree!:beer:

Sean 02-06-2010 07:35 PM

I have to say that with more time and money I could have gone about the swap a little different. I would have loved to buy a tubular crossmember and used a GTE and some other quality parts for some of the stuff like the turbo. I have to say I love the critics because the more people that make comments good or bad help my project and will help the next person to do it. I have hopes that if enough people do it than one day there will be a semi kit like the guys with the LS1 kits. I wish I could have made all of the motor under the hood but I dont have the fabrication ability to do so I wish I did. I am hopeful that I can used a cowl hood for like an old muscle car and adapt it nicely to my hood. I mad up some cardboard templates the other day and it looks like I can use a 4 inch cowl and it will fit under the hood. As for the exhaust I like the hood dump but at some point I am going to try very hard to at least get it under the car. As for the police I will do my best to avoid them and I only have to make it 2 years before it is historic but we will see how that goes. I will keep everyone updated and I really hope to see more of these conversions so one day I can buy a 97 and up and put a 2JZ in it with a lot less problems. Please keep the comments coming good or bad.

-Banks- 02-06-2010 08:31 PM

sean, you should definitely make some extra mounts and sell them!!! it would definitely make more people wanna drop jz series motors into their cars, many people dont like the fact of fabbing shit up simply because they dont have the skills or place to do it.

anyways, ever think about a 1jz swap? it would be a great alternative to a 2jzgte or building up your own na-t. about the same amount of money. the blocks are similar.

i think i would go this route if i were to do a jz swap. or if money were a real concern, n/a 2jz for now.

Sean 02-06-2010 08:49 PM

The next time I do this or most likely in this car when I change the motor I am going to build a 1.5 JZ. The 2JZ GTE bottom end with the 1JZ GTE head. The 1j head flows better and the 2j block makes more power. The best of both worlds and this set up is about 1 inch shorter in the head and the intake manifold dose not come back over the engine so that would be even more room.

Sean 02-07-2010 10:52 AM

I am not saying they are not nice cars or that there are not some fast ones out on the street but really its still a neon no matter what you do to it.

It is all about street cred and I aint got none!!

Sean 02-07-2010 08:25 PM

So I was looking at my car this morning while it was on the lift and noticed that the radiator bracket and intercooler bracket are about 1 inch lower than the bumper so I do not have enough money for the R-package lip that I would like so I am going to try something I have not seen in the miata world yet. I am going to try the HD (Home Depot) lip kit I will post pics as soon as I am done to see what everyone thinks of it. I plan to one day get an R-package lip but this will help hide the brackets for now.

buffon01 02-07-2010 08:33 PM

^^ Dude people have been rocking Home depot lip since the year of the flood. IIRC theres a write up in m.net, theyre made of plastic use to made the door seal flush to the floor.

here's one of the ones Ive seen

Well here it is I got the lip on. I tried a piece with a little double sided tape and did not like the gap it made so I used some adhesive I had in the shop and it worked great. I want everyone to keep in mind that this is not a lip for performance it is cosmetic and it is to hide the bracket coming down for the radiator. It covers the bracket and looks good. I also put a little tire shine on it to make it shiny.

-Banks- 02-07-2010 10:09 PM

i hate srt's. granted they are fast but i wouldnt drive one. just wanted to say he made it to srt forums.

*edit* sean if ur gonna do the diy lip go to home depot, look for "diamond loc garden edging" i did it. it works pretty good. looks okay. just when you finish bolting it up use black silicone between the lip and the bumper so you dont see any holes. way better than the garage door underseal lip. but it is a bit more expensive:

the edging is 10 bucks +- and for 12 pairs of nuts and bolts 5-8 bucks? the garden edging is thick plastic, not rubber. perfect lip for a low miata imo. when i had the garden edging lip on my subaru it ripped off at one point. but i slammed the absolute shit out of it so thats why.

Burnout gone wrong. Apparently this little stunt broke the block and crank in half. The piece you see flying out of the hood is the flywheel...

I seriously worry about the younger generation, this kind of stupidity seems to be the norm, not the exception. From the famous Red Foreman... "DUMB ASS"

gospeed81 02-09-2010 11:53 AM

Who the fuck would try and do a burnout with their nose protruding into a street (with traffic, see Toyota drive by afterwards) and probably pointed at a car on the other side of the road.

Deserved it.

I realy like the GV lip or touge lip I just did not know what they were called before but as soon as I get some money together I will get one. They are only $180 on R-speed witch is the same cost as the R-package lip so I think I will just go with the GV lip.

Sean 02-13-2010 05:16 PM

I picked up a beautiful set of used axles and a driveshaft from hackerchris and I got my shifter in from ebay so I will be updating with pics on monday I hope. As long as we do not get anymore snow I will finally get some more work done.

mx5autoxer 02-14-2010 10:36 PM

Just gotta say: I met an srt4 guy a couple days ago and for all I know he's probly related to the guy from the video.

Sean 02-15-2010 01:47 AM

Its seems to be a trend to be a big D bag if you have an SRT-4 or an idot. For example there is a guy I went to school with who went a bought one about three weeks ago and he is a high school drop out, lives with granma and has no job like the average SRT owner. I also want to say I do not belive all SRT owners are idiots but it seems a lot are. I have meet and know a couple guys that are real cool that own them. On to the story. He tells me about his sweet new ride that he has painted the grille on and part of the interior and it still only has 1000 miles on it "idiot" and how fast it is. Then he proceeds to tell me he has no plans on paying for it, he got it for no money down and he is going to beat the crap out of it and drive it for 2 or 3 months until they repo it. I was thinking awesome you finaly have a car that runs and you are going to beat it up and not keep it awesome. So last night I am driving through town and what do I see, the same dumb ass takes his new car down a street with 4 people in the car on a down hill off camber turn, at about 60MPH and hits a parked car. He hit a parked blazer because the new tires on the car were already bald and it hit this blazer so hard it pushed it over the curb and through a fence in a lady's yard about 10 Ft. off the road. The hood flew off in one piece and flew into the other yard. So now he gets off scott clean because he did get gap insurance. So now we have one more idot with out an SRT running around.

mx5autoxer 02-15-2010 10:47 AM

I do have to say that there are some SRT-4 guys at the local 1/8 that know what they are doing and are reasonably nice- a little cocky- but nice.

Ok so I got some more work done today you can't see it all but it got done. The roll bar is completely in all the bolts are tight and in. The harness is in on the drivers side, I have to do some seam welding on the passenger side before that one gets done. The rear axles are in and they look great. They are from a 2001 miata and bolted right in with my RX-7 rear. All the brakes are complete with e-brake cables hooked up and lines installed. I had to trim the rear dust shield a little bit as well. I picked up a R-Package front lip locally for a good deal and got rid of my "DIY" lip. The first lip looked good but this is defiantly better, more money than I intended to spend but well worth it.

Sean 02-16-2010 10:26 PM

I got the shifter in today and much to my surprise it comes out in the stock location perfectly. I had to trim about a half inch off the front of the opening in the trans tunnel and of course I had to remake my own shifter. I love buying new parts and cutting them in half as soon as you get them. So to sum it up the shifter looks good and fits into the stock surrounds and all with out cutting the plastic or of the center consol just a little off the trans tunnel. Here are the pics so you can see what it looks like. I painted the shifter just to keep the rust off. I can not upload anymore pics I have used all my space but here are the photobucket links I will have to join the forum so I can upload more.

No pictures but I do have some updates. I got my harness yesterday so I will send it out monday and I will have it back and ready to go in about 6 weeks. The turbo housing is done being welded so I can finish plumbing it, and I finished the oil drain today and got it heat wraped so it won't get to hot. The list is getting smaller little by little. The only major thing left to buy is the driveshaft and I have to take it to the place to have it made.
