Closed loop idle is so much better than PWM. I've got it pretty decently tuned just need to mess with it some more.

They are both PWM but we know what you mean. I use warm up just to set a base VE, idle screw and base AE than switch to CL and retune everything. Idle, AE. VE, etc. I just dont prefer diving into CL with out the car running half way decent in warm up.

ScottyP3821 07-23-2014 03:32 PM

Once you get good at PID it goes from being your biggest enemy to your best friend.

Jeffbucc 07-23-2014 03:51 PM

Yeah that is what I'm fine tuning right now. It definitely helped tuning warmup up for a while and then doing closed loop. Biggest hurdle was make it so the RPMs didn't ramp up 2-3k and hang.

I'm also getting a new bracket made for my waste gate actuator. The housing On the waste gate is hitting the turbo housing so I'm bleeding psi early at around 10-12 psi. Making it difficult for the EBC tuning. Seems erratic in how it responds. At times it'll peak at 10-12 and others it will go up to 26 as it should.

I had the same issue with the shitty fm bracket. Its a poor design that allows for flexing. I went with the kinugawa and love it. The mount is strong and the actuator is serviceable and the springs can be upgraded. I was having the same issues as you are at lower psi and that was the only way to tune EBC. I also had to end up running my solenoid differently. I run it like its external even though its for an internal. I was able to get better response out of the actuator and keep it closed longer and release faster. Im only at 10psi with the 2560 but my ebc is tuned so well that I can control boost easily with my foot. No lag at all, zip zero nadda. Ill give people rides and thats the first thing they notice Holy Shit it spools fast. I dont have overboost issues or weather dependance's. Stays at 10psi no matter if its 105º or 35º. The kinugawa actuator comes with upgradable springs as well to increase pressure.

Jeffbucc 07-24-2014 12:44 PM

Damn. Jealous of the lack of lag with the 2560. 2860 on mine doesn't have much but you can feel it. Probably due to my rough settings.

I actually found out it was a tuning issue. After taking a look at 99mx5's ebc settings and actually reading the megasquirt manual thoroughly I found my issue was mostly related to my Lower Limit Delta% I had way to small of a window for it to climb and my proportional was way to low in relation to my integral. Still fine tuning it to peak at 26 psi but it climb up to it without a sharp cutoff like it was doing before.

Here is my rough settings. Jesus it is scary now. I want to look at my gauges when I'm in full boost but my brain is too concentrated on keeping the beast in a straight line.

Not worth watching at least. Trying to get the last bugs out of the system before I do. You don't want to watch a video of it cutting boost early!

Sounds about right! And then you can't find the next gear because everything is blurry

ScottyP3821 07-24-2014 02:16 PM

You may also try moving that slider down a bit to reduce sensitivity so you can use less D. Once you get close to your target I use I to not only cancel out oscillation but to give it that final umph to reach the target. You need to find a buddy that will hold the laptop for you. When I tune EBC I bring the wife with me and have her input what settings I tell her and she watches the gauge and tells me what boost I hit and if any oscillation. I also run a data log at the same time to refer to later. Its best to get a woman to go with you they ask less questions and when they see you can tune your car it gives them girl boners haha

Jeffbucc 07-24-2014 09:27 PM

Thanks as always for the advice Scotty. I'll see if the weather is kind tonight. Hard to do long pulls with an ambient of 111°!(seriously I am dying).

Right now I'm working on decreasing coolant temps. Crusing at 85mph when it was 108° this morning causing my coolant to hover around 213°.

-Just finished wiring the dual fan mod and tested it
-made a rubber grommet for my funnel with some old mtn bike tubes. Made a really nice tight seal(helps that my funnel is perfectly sized to the radiator cap). Raised the front of the car up as high as I could and burped it for a while. Previously I thought I had gotten all of it but after a couple gurgling/boiling sounds were heard I obviously was still having problems with it.
-Also working on sealing my engine bay even better

If all that does not help then I think I may need to upgrade to the TSE $$$ radiator. The radiator on the car may have been good for Alabama but as anyone in the desert knows, it gets painfully hot out here. Or maybe I am just a giant pussy now due to my VW and its arctic winter AC. Picked up some Mexican after driving back down to St George from Cedar City, and after I got out of the car I noticed I made a big mistake by wearing light colored clothes...my entire back was soaked with sweat.

Plus don't get me started on the weird shit VEAL autotuning starts doing in this heat.

Sshantz 07-24-2014 10:58 PM

Just finished reading the entire build. Amazing build thread and attention to detail. Enjoy the car man!

ScottyP3821 07-24-2014 11:45 PM

Yeah veal will always change. Veal should just give you an idea where you need to be but you will still need to run data logs and adjust your table manually. Also make sure your gamma air correction stays above 100 as intake temps increase. I hear yeah when it comes to heat it's been hot as hell here but not as hot as what your seeing. You may want to also upgrade to some spal fans as well or something that flows a lot of cfm. A cross flow would help for sure.

Jeffbucc 07-25-2014 04:05 PM

It blows my mind how well sealing gaps helps your coolant temp. I put some rubber vacuum tubing on top between the radiator cowling and the radiator itself, I also took the screws out of the bottom cowling I made earlier and put some thick foam weatherstripping in there. Also used a little thermal wrap and sealed the miscellaneous holes in it(excluding a couple drain holes).

Drove around town for a while and didn't see temps over 205° even after slaloming the cones *cough*...cars of all the old retired people going 10 under the speed limit. That is almost a 10° difference! Hopefully it stays that way.

I think I need to do another flush of the system though, My water was already quite brown, but now that I think about it I never really did a flush besides refilling the coolant system after I put the car together.

I didn't even have slutty miata man sex either...just contact aids...

Not to rub it in or anything either Fae, but the car is completely done now.

Found why my tach wasn't working! I literally tried everything to get it to work and then looked at 2k and 1E on the tach wires and the connector they ran to wasn't connected. I know, you think I'm a dumbass, but it wasn't my fault! The male connector had somehow got hidden behind one of the HVAC tubes, literally tucked as far back out of site as possible. Once I connected it and shorted ib- everything was hunky dory.

The bastard that has caused me so much headache. I used the old mangled harness to track where the wires went to, helped a lot.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1406336172

and a quick video of it working. I hadn't aligned the gauges yet but they are all perfect now. May want to turn your volume down a bit, my phone microphone exploded.

I really planned on it but my Gopro was dead. I'm driving up to Cedar tonight so I'll make sure to get some recording going. Hard to get a good angle of both the instrument cluster and the center console gauges.

Jeffbucc 07-26-2014 10:57 AM

You know, by completely done, I mean the bigger stuff, not fine tuning, I'm not dumb enough to think a car is completely done.

Jeffbucc 07-26-2014 09:32 PM

I guess Hornet demanding a video is all it takes! Took some quick videos before my card filled up. Needed to get back home quick since I had some frozen fruit from Costco becoming a congealed mass.

There was a ton of traffic so I couldn't get very many good(long) runs in, but I did manage to get a highway on-ramp.

Sorry if the video position is odd, I just didn't have a very good mounting spot for the Gopro. Also sound was a little too muffled. I guess I used too much foam.

You slipping the clutch or burning rubber? Looks fast and smooth.

You need to build one of those combo iPod/iPhone/GPS mounts like I have. Takes great vid with a nice speed and G overlay. Then you'll lose your license for sure.

I really do. Honestly, it would be fine if I had a 6" extension to pull the camera down past the rear view while still having L.O.S. on the gauges.

Having the GoPro mounted made me nervous every time I passed a cop. Not to mention 5 seconds after the freeway on-ramp pull, right as I slowed down, a cop headed the opposite way went by. Almost voided my bowels I got so lucky.

Jeffbucc 07-27-2014 01:11 AM

Also, I know at some point I'll probably need to replace the Unicorn Fairy Dust Coilovers but I dread the day I do. They ride so so smooth. Almost better than my VW is some areas. Really has opened my eyes to what a revalved tuned damper can do. They may be a touch soft for track duty, but seeing as it won't dip under 100º anytime soon...I don't think it is on the immediate futures agenda.

turbofan 07-27-2014 01:23 AM

I'm mostly kidding. They are the SD revalved Bilsteins everyone keeps saying are so "rare". Probably not that special but I like ehm.

*edit* Bonneville would be awesome but I hear it absolutely destroys your car if you don't protect the shit out of it. I can't imagine trying to get all that salt out of the nooks and crannies.

Yeah we aren't blessed with a ton of autox/race courses in Utah. We have Miller Motorsports in SLC and then Vegas Speedway. We only have a few autox events. Both are about the same distance. Vegas would be insane to even attempt during the summer. I'd probably die from heat stroke.

Trust me guys, I know the video shows me doing a little bit of unsafe driving but I haven't gotten a ticket since I was 17, and I rarely do more than 5 over the posted speed limit.

Due to a HUGE misunderstanding(power complex Idaho cop), while on a Ducati, I was held in the county jail for a weekend with 10+ Mexicans going through crystal meth withdrawals and a guy who had just stabbed someone several times. This has made me a giant sissy about breaking the law. No, the soap was not dropped.

hornetball 07-27-2014 02:23 PM

Those silly ID Mormons. They're just jealous.

When I lived in Boise, I was about 3 miles away from the Firebird drag strip. That was fun.

Jeffbucc 07-28-2014 01:01 PM

Why the hell do I keep commuting 45 miles each way in the Miata rather than my 1-gallon-each-way TDI.

This car is so addicting to drive. I've driven some very fast cars before, but there is something nervously exhilarating about doing it in a 2100 lb car. Even though the acceleration matches some other german cars I've driven, it is your perception/connection to speed that is skewed. You feel like you are going double the speed you really are going. I can't explain it properly, my brain is fried after a long morning of baking.

No restoration/buyers remorse is present. Having a hellish day? Go take the Miata out for a spin and you'll feel better guaranteed.

Jeremy Clarkson was not wrong when he said: "Put simply, an MX5 feels more alive at 30mph than most other cars feel at 100."

I wonder what he would say about a boosted one?

Not too bad. There is still a bit of a pulsing feel though, or juddering. Still feels like there is something off causing some oscillation in pressure as it is accelerating. Minor, but it is there.

Set your autotune values to stop working below 1500 rpm.

bummer about the glass.

yes, just set the parameters in autotune

I always have it set past 1300 and past 35kpa and tune the bottom manually. It has never worked properly down low for me on any of the megasquirts

I use custom filter

"rpm < 1500 && map < 35"

this should stop VEAL from messing with those cells.
as 18psi just said, it really likes to mess up the low KPA cells. I added a && tps < 3 parameter as well I think (I don't have it infront of me) to stop it from completely leaning out my bottom row.
