I've already warned my employees about the shenanigan classified boxes from the "Miata website" I may get, and my bakery address is the only way I can guarantee I'll get it so...do your worst?
Plus they don't get to say shit, I just spent $2k on Panini Presses to make them happy. |
This is going to be fun. If only Genesplicer lived closer to me...
|
Plust they already know all miata owners get their paninis pressed regularly
|
 oh dear. My wife is going to start asking questions

Getting close! Still need to wire in my new EBC(old one wasn't working very well), get the oil cooler lines made, and get the bumper back on.
Radiator is filled up and installed. Bitch is huge! Attachment 238428 Still a tight fit, may trim the throttle body hose a little to pull it in. Attachment 238429 RC-1s mounted on the 6uls. I kinda like it with black wheels. Attachment 238430 |
Black wheels are the best wheels
|
Get that shit slammed and in the sun, stat.

You will never overheat again. Impressive rad and oil cooler sir!

Car looks perfect Jeff. Really like those black wheels on it too.

Times? Vid?
|
Wow your car looks fantastic!
I vote for keeping the black wheels and adding wrinkle black powder coat on the exterior door handles. |
I vote for driving the everliving shit out of it and not worrying about the door handles.
|
If really looks fantastic!! I have tried reading thru your thread many times, still haven't gotten all the way thru it. :crx: Wish my hood vents would have turned out as well as yours.....
|
Well folks, I'm going in. Got a few hours to spare, and I'm going to start on page 1.
I've heard great things, but 160 pages is intimidating. |
Totally worth it. Enjoy.

Well Im 50/161 pages done. Taking a break.
Me so far, as the car starts to be reassembled.... Attachment 238423 |
Alright, so I have made it to page 88. I definitely need the Fab9 intercooler in my life.
Make that 97. 105 pages, 2100 posts. I need to get off for a while and drive the hour home so I can go to sleep. |

Sadly I didn't get many runs. It was still worth going, but since it was the first event of the year we had 130 cars show up. The entire corvette club was there to get their 2 races a year in to keep their membership valid, and then a bunch of new scca members as well. I was told it is always like this at the first event, and then it goes back down to normal attendance afterwards. Since there were so many cars, and I was so tired, I only too part in the morning session. If I would have stayed till the 2nd heat, I would have been there till 7pm, and I knew I'd be too tired to drive back. The car performed perfectly though. The new boost controller is leaps and bounds better than my old one, and the car built boost immediately. I detuned it to 12 psi and I think I like the car better at that power level(even for daily driving). More usable power, less spinning rubber. The tires too...hot damn, the RC-1s are so amazing. At previous autocross sessions, I was unable to use the throttle through any longer sweepers due to it wanting to break lose, but I was able to modulate the throttle through the corners so effortlessly. They would grip so hard through the corners that even when I would start sliding they would maintain grip through the slide...does that make sense? Hard to explain. Their slip feedback and grip threshold are a beautiful thing. I was running 36 up front and 37 in the back and it worked great. My best time was a 50.33. I think the best time of the day was a monster 450hp STI with a shitload done to it. He ran a 45.88 I believe. So not to bad in my opinion, for my driving level. If I would have had more runs I could have easily hit a 48 second run. Here's the video of the 50.33 time. It is funny how slow or undramatic (in my eyes) it makes it look. I think the car is finally ready for the track. |
Lookin good Jeff. Definitely looked like the car had more in it and you'd have improved considerably with more sleep and more runs!

The AutoX group was also INCREDIBLY clickish. It was like highschool all over again. But hey, to each their own. |
I'm looking forward to trying it out. I think I'll feel more comfortable pushing the car harder because lower speeds. We'll see.

That said, I have much more fun hill climbing. |
$40 for a cheap day of being able to run my car as hard as I want without repercussion is worth it to me.
The Vegas crowd doesn't take it too seriously, which is nice. Everyone is just there to have a fun day and hang out with fellow enthusiasts. I mostly enjoy taking a passenger ride in different cars. Fun to experience a lot of different models at their limit. |
I actually prefer our low speed technical tracks vs the local tracks that have 110+ MPH turns. I started on a high speed track my first day out. It was a lot of fun.
BIR http://www.triumph675.net/forum/atta...8&d=1365444574 However, there is a local track that top speed in my WRX was more 50mph to 60mph with a lot more turns. That is the track I have the most fun at. It also is laid out so that the course is always different. DCTC (elevation changes are hard to see from this pic, but they add to the fun) This is a technical college. http://www.roadclosedracing.com/drup...C%20Aerial.png Granted I also have the opportunity to host track days there for my buddies shop. Our track nights were $60 for the night for DCTC. I believe this year we are going to be in the $80 range. Drivers would get 4+ 25 min session and we would try to allow 5 - 6 cars on the track at a time. All depending on skill level. What is my point? There may be track options out there that are unknown to you. I had no idea there was a technical college within 30 mins of the city with a track. |

This is the attitude I need. The best part of Auto-X seems to be the social aspect. Would be a real turn-off if it's cliquish. Jeff seems to have found a good group.

I plan to be there in March... I think it's March 28... dammit that's a Saturday. Won't be there unless they have a Sunday run as well. Not completely sure what I'll be driving but I was offered the chance to drive a local's car and might very well do that. |

You don't need to do much to go to one. We have a highschool kid who shows up in a bone stock Honda Fit with All-Seasons and he drives that thing like he stole it. We love it when he lines up because it is so awesome to see a Fit being tossed like it's a sports car.
|
Also we usually get 12-14 runs in. Having as many cars as we did is definitely rare.

Aidan and Ed you both need to go to the Portland Historic Races and use the in field auto-x course. I usually volunteer to help set it up with a friend that runs the mini event, and the course is usually a mix of high speed slalom with tight decreasing radius turns that require good grip and brake modulation.
The best part: runs are $1, the entry is included in your ticket to the venue, and you don't have to shag any cones. The worst part: you have to wait until July 10th this year Bonus: Jay Leno is supposed to bring something interesting this year. Two years ago it was a 1958 Mercedes race team bus. 2015 Portland Vintage Racing Festival | SVRA |

THREAD DRIFT!
Mike is that the one where the entire course is lined with cones? I think Martin took Laz there last year, looked really fun. Gave you an introduction to AutoX without having to memorize or think about a course. |
Worth the 11 hour drive? Depends on how much of a vintage race car geek you are.
Worth going to from the Pacific North west (3-4 hour drive)? Absolutely. The course is lined with lime and has many, many, many cones (we don't want our volunteers getting bored in the hot sun). You won't get lost. Last year I borrowed an 800 hp cobra kit car that was visiting to "test" the course for speed and car width. There is such a thing as too much power. Jeff, sorry for the continuation of off topic posts, but since your build is essentially done... |
^Thanks for the info Miq, that sounds absolutely awesome. I'll be there.

Page 139. Should finish later tonight.

Well, I'm done. Fully read, post by post. Such an amazing build Jeff. I hope to somehow see it some day.
Given I'm only in a parts buying stage right now, I've definitely added some things to my list/plans, including the Fab9 intercooler, zerks, and potentially some zinc-plated bolts. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

#Miataroadsterswagger *looking back I have no god damn idea what I was thinking https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1421940116 |
how long did it take polishing that and not driving this beast?
:P |
An hour? Somewhere around there. I have a really nice random orbital buffer that I used in conjunction with a sanding pad and a microfiber pad w/ aluminum polish.
Too much time was spent not driving the car though, agreed. |
You know, I don't blame you. I was under my car last night taking the ppf bolts out and removing the wiring that's attached to it. It's a nice hunk of aluminum, and you had spit-shined everything else under there. Since you had the tools, what's an hour to make it perfect?
Is it bad that I can see your 'logic'? |

Maybe do yours a little backwards. Running and driving, and then clean it later on. |

Well...there goes my weekend of fun.
Took my dad for a spin for his first time, just in case I crashed on the trip to SoW. Wasn't driving very hard(12 psi) and as we were 3 blocks from home I suddenly lost all boost pressure and looked behind me and I was crop dusting the entire road. Literally couldn't see the road there was so much smoke. So I pulled over, and checked everything...no leaks, nothing to see. no bad noises while idling though so I figured it was safe to limp it home just being gentle. Blew my oil seals in my CHRA and some how my bearings are pretty nasty sounding. Not sure how I avoided contacting the wheel with the turbo housing wall, but lucky me I guess. My dad and I were laughing about how fortuitous my luck was that it happened the night before I drove out, rather than in the middle of the damn desert on the side of the road. My pops in a haze of smoke laughing at how it failed on his first ride. Attachment 238412 Just some of the oil I found past the oil seals. Attachment 238413 Shaft play(it was this bad prior to removing 1-2 housing bolts) I'm weirdly not even mad. Guess I'm more thankful that this happened prior to the trip, and not during. -TSE inconel hadn't budged a MM -All CHRA bolts were tight -no blockage in oil feed or oil return lines How the hell did this happen besides Murphey's Law? Now what do I replace this thing with....I'd like this in the new turbo: -faster spool -V-bands...everywhere(I'm done messing with hard to reach bolts) -total hp output isn't important as I have come to find the car more enjoyable at 12 psi. |
