Car gods, hear my prayer.

In my eyes, this is the final piece of the confounding puzzle. The. One. Damn. Thing. I have yet to touch.

I should have torn the block down when my Garrett turbo died. I knew I was rationalizing that nothing happened when it failed.

I'm just glad you are enjoying yours! You deserve it as much as anyone else.:likecat:

turbofan 10-20-2015 01:18 PM

Thanks Jeff. I am enjoying looking at it sitting in the garage while it rains outside. WILL resist taking it out in the rain :likecat:

curly 10-20-2015 09:48 PM

The two seals sitting on the head gasket aren't needed.

One's a 1.6 oil pump gasket, which is questionable anyways (all 1.8s only use RTV and the o-ring) and the other one is your driveshaft output seal that goes in the tranny.

Jeffbucc 10-20-2015 09:55 PM

Yeah not sure why I ordered a driveshaft seal, but apparently at the time, I thought it needed to be replaced.

Are ARP Main Studs "necessary"? Or better yet, do they help keep thrust tolerances at bay seeing as I don't have the girdle the newer engines have (04+?)

$100 isn't terrible, but I'm starting to be a bit more careful with what I buy instead of getting allthethings.

codrus 10-21-2015 04:12 AM

IIRC, Savington cracked a main bolt with an MBSP and stock bolts. I would (and did) go with ARP studs and no MBSP. I didn't line bore it (nor did I on the previous motor) and it's been fine.

--Ian

curly 10-21-2015 10:10 AM

Yeah I've never line bored, and plastigage clearances have always come out perfect with 60ft/lbs used on ARP mains.

Cool, thanks for the info, had a hard time finding definitive answers on it. Saves me some money if clearances work out.

Would one put a seal like that on an oil pump that doesn't? It's the race model, so I ain't scared. Better than chancing the old pump and trying to R&D honing the relief valve.

Just finished reading this ENTIRE thread over the course of a week.
Wow. . . . . . . . . .

cannot find a way to describe the awesomeness and amount I have learned from it.
Keep up the amazing work

He drove through a mud puddle and it got his car dirty. Could not stand the mess so he is busy taking his car completely apart to steam clean everything.

EO2K 12-11-2015 11:38 AM

He's spent too much time playing with VWs so he's scared to come back here :giggle:

Monk 12-16-2015 09:02 AM

Jeff, props are back buddy.
Come back to us.

I wouldn't expect a whole lot out of our buddy Jeff til after the holidays.

fivehundredton 12-17-2015 09:30 AM

Jeff? .....JEFFFFF?! At least post some before and after pictures of something you've cleaned at the bakery.

aidandj 12-17-2015 09:33 AM

You have to tag him.

@Jeffbucc

18psi 12-17-2015 03:21 PM

Santa is having Jeff steam-clean the sled and restore all the broken raindeer

fivehundredton 12-17-2015 05:58 PM

Har! We may have smurf blue turbocharged raindeer this year. :)

EO2K 12-17-2015 06:00 PM

I'm pretty sure he's alive, he's been posting stuff on Facespace.

Although that was back in the 9th, and he was playing with a Honda... :noes:

Jefe, el Jefito, is fine. Killing it at the bakery and getting his ducks in a row for the engine rebuild. There is engine porn everywhere in his garage. There is a bit of burnout, but the holidays make one want to slit their wrists a little bit at a Great Harvest. The car has dirty rain left on it, it's a healthy place. (Jeff's brother...):likecat:

TonyV 12-20-2015 05:43 PM

Daysss of reading... My god how epic, I feel like I know Jeff personally and share his wins and losses...that and I too share semi ocd\insomnia..just lack his level of execution and time to wrench

Subscribed as I'm too invested now to not see this thru

Rasta420 05-04-2016 12:36 PM

Wow!

If I ever make it to Cedar City I would like to shake your hand and buy you a beer!

On a different note, I don't see his attention to detail as OCD, I see this as competent professionalism in doing a job right the first time.

As I buy parts for my build and the costs begin to soar I can only imagine what your total figure looks like. I am new to the Miata world but feel like I know it well now thanks to your build thread.

Keep up the great work.

aidandj 05-04-2016 12:38 PM

People keep posting in here who aren't Jeff. And it gets my hopes up that Jeff is coming back.

Please stop posting here if you aren't Jeff.

Someone should make a book on this thread.

felrivad 07-06-2016 11:01 PM

kinda disappointing I read all of this to come to find that Jeff hasn't posted in here in over 7 months... what's up with that?

aidandj 07-06-2016 11:36 PM

He got busy with real life. Rumor is he'll be back soon. He misses the butt buddy life.

turbofan 07-07-2016 01:18 AM

Indeed, he will return when there is more Miata news, which I predict will be not tooooo long from now.

Zaphod 07-11-2016 10:34 AM

:drama:

now we are talking...

fivehundredton 07-20-2016 11:53 AM

Jeez, I sober up enough to log in an still no Jeff? He must have ricocheted off something and lost his memory. Goin' back to mourning The Hag.

18psi 07-20-2016 12:13 PM

Jeff,

When you do get back, if you want me to clean up all these pointless posts just let me know.

Philly Miata 08-04-2016 06:54 PM

Jeff,

I'm not going to be doing quite as an expansive rebuild as you are, but this question goes for anyone who can answer I guess. How does one find the little nuts, bolts, etc that may go missing or for some circumstance need to be replaced. Are there nut and bolt packs for cars that we can buy?

codrus 08-04-2016 07:18 PM

Mazda will sell you every single nut and bolt that goes on a stock Miata. You'll pay through the nose for it, but they have them. :)

--Ian

18psi 08-04-2016 09:17 PM

I've literally a bucket of miata fasteners/bolts/etc. too bad you're far away

aidandj 08-04-2016 09:19 PM

Didn't we already have the "no bumping jeffs thread if you arent jeff" discussion.

Please leave if your name isn't Jeff.

No bumperino. But yeah I looked through some Miata sites and they are indeed through the nose. I wish there were lists of specs for them so I could at least get some from a cheaper source if needed. Obviously, special ones shouldn't be substituted.

hornetball 08-05-2016 12:43 PM

Some of the Miata-specific junkyards will sell used OEM "bags of bolts" from Miatas. One in the PHX area comes to mind. Look on E-bay.

Hope you get it running soon and no more engine issues.

I'm recently going through the same thing.. Second rebuild and hopefully the last one for a while

miataki 12-25-2016 10:42 AM

Jeff may have run into a bit of an issue personally - Breaking bread in Cedar City | SUU News

Cannot believe he'd have let that bakery run down to that extent given his attention to detail in this thread but assume he just lost his energy in life. Saddened. Hope he is ok.

There were some extenuating circumstances that forced him to shut down. Shitty stuff.

Monk 12-25-2016 09:29 PM

All I took from that is that I want one of the old recipe sugar cookies.

18psi 12-25-2016 09:44 PM

Hopefully on to bigger and better things

Jeff's ok--perhaps reeling a bit from it all. But he's fine :) [source: Brother who loves him, his build, and things to come] The Miata slumbers in a garage.

He went super dark on FB there for a while too, maybe I should post pics of my engine bay and see if I can get him to come out of hiding and yell at me to clean it ;)

Go back and find some pictures of his nice clean engine bay, then photoshop dirt onto them. Then post them. That will get him out of hiding.

Fireindc 07-19-2018 09:00 PM

JeffBucc just posted in the classified section. He's alive!!

turbofan 06-14-2021 07:34 PM

But

where did Jeff's brother's post go?

Almarmada 06-14-2021 08:31 PM

I got self-conscious and second guessed whether I’d feel pressure to live up to expectations or schedules and I deleted it. I just wanna make it go fast as fuck and have fun doing hood-rat shit with my friends.
