Ultimately pretty aggressive fuel cut. It is a stock OEM sock, but anything below 6 gallons would fuel starve.

I'm sure you're probably pulling several lateral G's and there's a ton of slosh in the tank, but that doesn't sound like like a normal miata pickup to require 6 gallons. Hydramat is badass but I feel like its a pricey solution to a problem that doesn't exist for stock miata tanks.

I wasn’t the last person to install the pickup as it needed to come out during wiring. I’ll pull it and see if anything stands out. We had similar problems in Shawn’s Miata when first bringing it out. Though it was not near the fuel need.

I had a similar issue with fuel starve at one point only to find out my OEM sock had fallen off thanks to whomever serviced my fuel system prior to my ownership of the car. Slapped the sock back on and fuel starve was gone.

Check the pickup orientation too, I had my sock "180 out" in the tank and it gave me all kinds of troubles in left(?) turn scenarios.

Getting back to things I wanted to get done prior to hauling the car 1/2 way across the country.

I drilled some holes in some metal

Then I bent the metal with holes in it

Then I attached this

Still waiting on some splitter mounts. About to cancel the order and bend some up on my own, originally I had ordered them hoping it would save me some time, but now that nationals is over i'm rethinking that decision.

Will you be running with the top on to help air flow to the wing? Great build once again, congrats on making it to lincoln!

yeah, eventual plan to sell this oem unit and grab something more light weight but for the time being this will do. I can get under minimum with it, so not a huge priority. Just optimization down the line.

Wrapped up the riveting/install.

Wow, that's a BIG wing ... The camera angle probably exaggerates it a bit, but still it is big. Understandable for that kind of competition though, where big is good, bigger is better! Do you notice the drag at higher speeds?

BTW, good job on the mounts!

Not real sure, haven't run it. I did add spring to the rear of the car anticipating the aero, the lack of it at nationals made the car a handful. Interested to see if it calms it down.

Well, took the plunge into building my own splitter mounts. Once I made the decision the 9 lives units showed up. I probably could have ended up cutting them apart and making it work, but would lose all the quick release functionality. Figured I could fab something up myself without the ability to quick release, so I did.

2" flat, the swag offroad brake, and some bugger welds and the splitter is on

The splitter is heavy. I am sure I can remove multiple ballast plates after adding heavy. Not sure if this is the long term solution, but it works for now.

Oh, and found this

Not really sure when it happened or how long it has been like that. Trailer loading? Random cone carnage? Hitting the lip getting out of the garage? Neighbor came over and kicked it? Who knows.

boileralum 09-22-2022 08:53 PM

Cone carnage is my guess. The splitter should help protect, though, so that's nice. Last thing you need is to have to buy *another* radiator.

OUCH :(

Got the front air dam/splitter project buttoned up.

Pretty slow going. Continue to go back and forth with haltech on the dbw issues. Seems to get worse as the day goes on. Leads me to believe it is heat related? No real idea at this point, waiting on them to speak to r and d and point me in the right direction.

I’ve been taking the car to some events understanding there is an intermittent issue. Some have been better than others. Charlotte tour where I took a codriver the car wouldn’t make more than a run. Event this weekend it made 6 successfully.

other than that I have been buttoning up issues. The tail shaft seal was leaking so I replaced it. The hydraulic throw out bearing didn’t like the stock master so I swapped it with a 3/4 bore variance. Slowly trying to get this thing sorted.

Don't sacrifice a proper suspension and mechanical grip for aero load. Take a balanced suspension setup without aero, add a balanced aero setup, and go faster. Though in reality, the pleab downforce numbers on our door-slammer cars is super minimal. Would you change your spring rates if you added 30lbs to each corner?

Haltech got me the new ECU last week. I threw it in the car/loaded the map/got it started. I was originally thinking I would haul it down to GA this weekend, but when putting in the time off work remembered that I had other commitments that weekend. Bit frustrating to think you are close to a solution only to run out of events. Plan next year is to hit some stuff early and see if the new box resolved.

I have been getting around to setting up the dash. The ECU was passing pressure in absolute vs. gauge. Rather than rewrite the CAN protocol from scratch I opted to created some math channels. I can now see my targeted boost at a correct value. Added some can button positions to the dash as well as a fuel composition reference. Nothing too exciting. I've edited some of the channel names and values since this picture, was looking a bit busy.

The car has a backup camera. I added it thinking I would be pulling on and off the trailer and it would simplify some things as I deleted the mirrors, but the winch has taken over that duty. I hadn't been using it much as the only way to turn it on was through the dash. I mapped a generic sensor to a can button then referenced that button in the dash to switch to the video page. It works, but more importantly helped me learn both the ECU and dash software. I have a few more buttons and rotary setups I want to create, so this was a good first learning experience.

First event of the year last weekend. I threw the sink and the dbw problem. Different ecu/pedal/throttle body. It appears to have had an impact as I made it through the event without another reoccurrence. We will see if that holds up with another event this weekend.

Finally paying attention to other areas. The brakes need some attention, going to swap masters and see what that gets me. I also do not have enough gear, 68 mph in second with the 4.3 runs out awfully quick on the smaller local lots I have been running. Sourced a 3.9 that will put 2nd in the mid 70s.

mr20turbo 04-03-2023 03:13 PM

Got to a Cincinnati local this weekend. I ran first heat in rather cold temps. Luckily I had a co-driver and blankets to help make it manageable. The car made 12 runs without a dbw fault so here is to hoping that continues. Brakes still need attention, new master will be here this week and I'll swap it out.

Anyway, video from this weekend.

Looks like a riot! Glad the DBW issue appears to be resolved
