I've got a tool that is absolutely perfect for that sort of thing. It's called a checkbook.

Seriously, I'm no fabricator. Engines, electronics, these things I am good at. Chassis and suspension fab, not so much. And a project of this magnitude really isn't the place for me to learn, it would only end in frustration and something asymmetrical. So I'm paying a guy to build the frame for me.

I'd previously had my heart set on a Westie. Even made a detour way the hell up to Palisade, Colorado (through the mountains, in a snowstorm, at night, while driving a moving truck on my way from Florida to SoCal) just to sit in one. You guys saw the pictures. And I gotta say, seeing it in person it wasn't quite as ugly as I'd feared. And surprisingly, I actually fit into it reasonably well. Except my feet. Even with just my socks on, it was tight as hell down there.

One thing you'll note, if you look very closely at the following picture, is a cardboard cutout of the bottom of my left shoe hanging on the wall between the wooden cabinet and the levels, partly obscured by the frame:

EDIT: So what all is already mounted in the back? Looks like just the trans-axle...is there really room (longitudinally) to put the boxer and the Porsche unit?

That vehicle actually isn't mine. I'm in line behind one other guy. His car will be running a Type-IV (VW bus) engine, which is what's installed in that frame. Here's a marginally better view:





The Sooby engine is considerably wider, but actually just a tad shorter front-to-back.

with something like that I'd consider something really large and laggy for the turbo. With a td04 or vf you will be getting sideways in just about every gear around 3-5k. The torque onset throws you back in the seat in a 3280lb car, I can only imagine 1000lb

It'll be interesting to see how that turns out. One interesting possibility which has only just occurred to me is that with the electronic throttle, I can shape the throttle map. I'm not sure if it'll allow me to do gear-dependent throttle mapping, which would be cool. As it is, I'm already assuming that first gear will be entirely useless, and second questionable.

 

So someone's fabbing these from a Jig set-up or similar? $$$?

Chassis is gorgeous, what's the ETA? What all are you getting from this guy, just the frame or suspension as well? AKA, cheap with miata control arms, or nifty custom units?

 

Strange, those look like cast aluminum control arms and spindles. +1 on where'd they come from?

ETA is probably a couple of months out. And thus the rub- y'all made me show my whole hand, and now it's going to be quite a while before I have any more pretty pictures to show.

I'll be getting a rolling chassis. Basically the frame, with the suspension and steering components hung, the engine & tranny mounts, and a shifter.


They're stock parts from a Pontiac Solstice / Saturn Sky. Turns out that car has a really well thought-out suspension, uses most of the same hardware front & rear, and is highly adjustable. The only downside is the 5x110 lug pattern, which is a real oddball for which not a massive selection of wheels exist. I considered re-drilling to a different pattern, but Konig has a couple of wheels which will fit, and I think we'll just go with that.

Sadly, no. The tranny is already at the fab shop, and I'll be shipping the engine out soon for fitment. After that, it'll be a fairly long wait until anything interesting happens.


It is a concern. The 901 transmission was used on the 911s up until the early 70s, at which point they were putting ~ 180 HP through it. I'll be doing a fair bit more than that, so we'll just have to see how it turns out. On the plus side, 901 transmissions are fairly cheap, as most of the cars originally equipped with them have long since rusted in half.
